centering a chainring

first off-I'm new to bmx. I bought a replcement chainring. How do you center it? It did come with an adapter, but that's for a smaller spindle. Is there another adapter I need? I tried to center it by sight, it's still a little off and the chain goes from tight to slack. It's driving me nuts and I don't think it's doing the chainring any good either.

You'll need to get the proper hat spacer (adapter) for your chainwheel/crank spindle combo.

And a good sprocket that doesn't bend when you tighten the sprocket bolt (I've had that)

I went from the stock DK 44 ring to a Failure 28 ring. Thanks!
