Thinking about BMX ...

Hi !
I'm commuting to work (18K each direction) and wants something fun (I'm new to BMX ...) - Can I ride BMX that far ?

"my sources say no"

hmmm, it's not looking good for you.

Probably not. I commute about 10mi roundtrip per day with my BMX, and that's just about the limit of tolerability, I think. Even with a high seat, it's simply not a great riding position when you've got a moderately heavy backpack.

It is fun though, because the high strength and small size make it agile and let you ride pretty much anywhere.

What kind of BMX are you interested in trying? Flatland, racing,....? 18 Kilometers is way far to commute on a BMX bike each day. You will probably want to add BMX riding to your normal riding regiment rather than get off of your road bike for commuting.

at least get a crusier.

tbh my 8ball remark was just meant to imply that we really didn't have enough information to hazard a guess. I mean, are you in shape? is there a paved path to and from your work? is it uphill? how early do you get up? Can you be sweaty and smelly at work?
try it on your off day and see how it works out.

I could do it. I dont want to, but i could. That doesnt mean you can or that you cant.

I do about the same as syn0n in a day, about 10 miles, give or take a few. I'd recommend trying it out first, I commute with a BMX because they're sturdier and more agile, and I prefer the size way more than that of an MTB or a road bike. It's way more fun, but you'll have to be able to tolerate 1 gear no matter how steep the hills get.

I don't think single speed is the problem. I thing the problem will be damaged knees.

The days when I didn't have a car I use to commute/ride to places with good spots with a bmx, it was the worst thing ever.

Haha. I do run my seat high, roughly 7" or so.

fuzzbox 10-23-07 10:01 PM

I run mine like 3 inches give or take a few. I don't get why people get angrah when they see a high seat.

syn0n 10-23-07 10:27 PM

Well, it's not really great for doing tricks, and some people don't like the look I guess.

FitRider 921 10-23-07 10:28 PM

My seat is pretty much slammed. I can't get the damn allen key in.
