Tell him to not hold back on the details, I had a similar bike that I did up last winter and went crazy with the little details and it really made it stand out:

if it were me I would remove the cable guide from the seat tube, I had one and all it did was jack up my braking and make things ugly and annoying. BTW I like the colored fork drops, it's a nice touch.

The black on is the one I'm currently riding, it's a 06 DK Dayton.
The Blue one is the MacNeil Heaton that I broke last season.
And the purple one is a Hyper with a Mosh looking frame.

And these are just my BMX bikes, I have a tallbike, lowrider, two fixies, vintage bike, very vintage bike, and a DH race bike.

You say that in every thread, we don't care that you're getting into DH/FR.

cool 'goose. here's my '99 Sniper. $15 NOS Ebay frame, components and fork from a thrown-away Royce Union. Hard to tell from the picture but it's a chrome frame and I painted the fork with satin black wood stove paint.

I wouldn;t worry, in my experience the progression for kids as far as their interest USUALLY goes
BMX --> Mountain bikes --> road bikes

starts off with bmx, durable as all hell and you can do a lot with em, then they look for something a little more versatile and that can do more so they get into MTBs then, some also will get into cyclocross and eventuially to roadies, a lot of em go to roadies due to the sheer speed potential.

just my 2 cents

That's pretty much true in a way. My brother was like that except he did it for fun.
