what's the difference between net and com?

bikeforums.net and bikeforums.com look very close to the same but aren't. that with that?

I used the .com to host the forums for about a year, but i grew out of that host. Now NetSol has the domain locked up, and im unable to move the .com to the new server. So i have put a pointer site to the .net site on the .com ... whew!
