freecoaster hubs
Hey guys I'm new to bmx and I was wanting to install a freecoaster hub on my bmx bike its a eastern bike 19.5 inch tube. Do you know anyone who makes a good quality hub, I need to practice roll back and my 180 bunny hop thanks.
|
you don't need a new hub to learn rollbacks.
you simply need to practice. flatlandfuel.com has hubs...... |
BUT a freecoaster will help him NOW and in the future...yeah check www.flatlandfuel.com
|
no it won't. you don't need a freecoaster to do rollbacks.
some even find it harder to do rollbacks using a freecoaster. just find a large smooth parking lot and push yourself backwards while siting on the seat. |
thanks guys, will any of the hubs work with my bike?
|
yes. if you have a 3/8 inch rear axle I would suggest buying a hub with the same size rear axle.
you can buy a 14mm axle hub but you may have to file the dropouts out on your frame and if you don't know what your doing you will be buying a new frame. you are aware of the 'play' or slack that a freecoaster has, right? that is, when you try to pedal forward after pedaling backwards, even if your rolling forward, your pedals will not engage until the pedals go about 1/2 way around. unlike the freewheel you have now, there is play in the freecoaster hubs. you can try and remove it but most people end up with more then they really want unless they ride flat exclusively. |
I would suggest buying a complete rear wheel, not just the hub.
|
Do you like the freecoaster hubs? It just seems hard to do a 180 rollback when the pedals start going backwards.
|
Oh, and do most of the pros like Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist use these hubs?
|
it only seems hard because you haven't spent enough time practicing. with a freecoaster hub, if you push down(forward) on the pedals while rolling backwards, the pedals will start to go backwards just like your regualar freewheel hub. so you still have to learn HOW to use the hub.
this is why I suggested learning how to rollback because just buying that hub won't automaticly make you be able to do rollbacks. you will STILL have to spend time learning how to rollback as well as learn how to use the hub. I have a freecoaster on my flatland bike but can do most of my rear wheel tricks on my other bmx bike that has a freewheel. I don't like freecoaster hubs for doing rollbacks, they seem to mess me up. pedaling backwards somehow seems to help my balance.... what I HATE about freecoasters is the play they have. there is a reason why so few street riders use them. |
oops. i see you posted while I was posting...
NO. most pro street riders don't use freecoaster hubs. I don't know of any that do actually. but that doesn't mean none of them do. they have to much play in them. so when you go to pedal forward, your cranks/pedals have to go forward a ways (1/4 turn or so, sometimes more) before the rear hub engages and you can start pedaling forward. |
what is your favorite beginner bike? I chose a eastern it seems to be good I have put it through hours of punishment and it seems to be holding up good.
|
I like easterns they make great bikes.
but really, my favorite bike is the one that I am riding at any given time. to me, as long as the bike has air in the tires, and I can pedal it, it's great. what it really comes down to is skill. so many people spend money on a bike (or guitar, car, computer etc.) and they don't have the basic skills to use it. dave mirra could ride the biggest pile of junk bike really well. because he knows how to ride a bike, really well. bottom line is, have fun. if you enjoy riding you will get better and the better you get the better understanding of what parts work how you want them to or need them to. |
On the 180 bunnyhop wounln't you have to have a freecoaster hub when you land backwards?
Or could you pedal backwards? Thanx |
you simply pedal backwards.
first learn rollbacks. it's easier to learn sitting at first then you can stand or sit once you can do them. so raise your seat a bit if it's super low. sit on your seat and with your feet on the ground, push your self backwards. put your feet on the pedals and try to go as far as you can. you can use a small hill to help yourself get backwards momentum if you like as well. another way is to do a small endo and when your backwheel it's the ground, start pedaling backwards. practice.practice.practice. |
you never answered his question
i have a nankai freecoaster hub and it works great. theres not much slack because i learned how to do mainainence on it by taking it apart and remembering how it went back together and greasing it. i barely have any slack, and its great. this 1/2 turn stuff is crap, i have never seen anyone who has 1/2 turn slack, so do not listen to "all mighty god of bikes" such as the previous reply has led you to believe. if you want a freecoaster hub, the second best is a nankai. the first is suntour coaster with an unbrake, but those are rare. so go with the nankai, it will never do you wrong as long as you take care of it. he is right though, keep practicing, youll get it.

mikelanno- I don't claim to be a god, I've just been riding for a very long time and have seen alot of freecoaster hubs.
HELL YES you can make them work well if you take them apart as you did. but for most beginners, that is too much work. and yes, Nankai make one of the best hubs available. |
how about haros freecoaster hub?
|
don't know anything about the haro hubs.
nankai makes the best and suntour hubs are great too but you don't see those around much anymore. |
as afar as ive heard, the haro Turbine hub is mroe suited to some light street riding.
im on a Primo Bomb freecoaster right now. even a ****ty one like mine will work GREAT if you take care of it. i usually give my bike a big cleandown and re greasing once a month, including hubs and bototm bracket. |
