What do i do about my axle?

Well, i got some new wheels, but the axles that come on it are completely and evenly round, not like the one's previously on my GT bike. Which have two sides opposite of each other, which are flat so that they can slide into the fork. (Only the front axle needs to be like this).

I was thinking that maybe i should swap out the axles and then it should be fine, or grind down a portion of the axle so that it would fit into the fork. What do you guys think?

Buy a less ****ty fork.

b3nsonx 08-16-08 10:18 PM

that's an option, but i rather do something less expensive first...then we'll see

In that case, your best bet will probably be to (carefully) grind out the dropouts on the fork so that they can fit a non-slotted 3/8" axle.

alright, what's the best tool to use for this job? and wouldnt that exposed area rust?

A file, dremel or drill. If you take care of your bike, no.

after you file it, throw some paint on there to cover up the bare metal.

It will come off once you stick the the wheel on.

what do you mean?
so after i file it and stick the whole wheel on, it wont hold in the fork?

no he was talkin about the paint. just use a few layers, and let them dry ALL the way. that might help a little.

b3nsonx 08-17-08 02:52 PM

alright sounds, good. i have some touch up paint for my car that i will use on the the fork.

Street rider 08-17-08 03:04 PM

A little bit of rust never killed anyone.

Wow, slotted 3/8th's, how old is this bike?

b3nsonx 08-18-08 11:17 AM

My brother said it's from 94.

Street rider 08-18-08 11:55 AM

dood thats oldddddddddddddddddddd.

b3nsonx 08-18-08 01:07 PM

yea...........wow, the axle is too small for the fork...
I dont know what size it is, but o well. Im gonna just sell this bike, it's too much hassle to restore and fix. The older stuff on the bike doesnt really help either, like the old style U brakes, and stuff...
I guess it's time to get my DK rage :)
