fixing up my old bike
long story short, i got a free, old haro x2 (the one with "nyquist" on it)
it's old, like from 01 or something, before all bikes came with 3 piece cranks http://bmxmuseum.com/image/s3500056_lg.jpg (NOT MY BIKE but same thing, only red with no stickers. oh and one piece crank) lots of rusty parts but the frame is nice.. i think. first off, is it a decent frame to mess around on? surely the frame is better than the haro f1 that i just cruise around on. i know it's a dirt jumper but i wanna run it on the street or both. i'm sure that wont be a problem but iunno. i just wanna switch out the cranks/chainring/freewheel. what are good inexpensive brands? the x2 i have comes with a 1-piece "mega crank" or whatever which means i'll need a new bb i think. rims and stuff are okay so far, i was gonna paint the bike and get new bolts and stuff for it and tighten down the cones on the hubs or whatever. i work at a store with a bike shop that sells haro stuff and i got access to tools and things and also have a bunch at home. i mostly ride fixed. bmx is just a lil different and it'd be cool to learn something new. so yea suggestions plz |

It'd be alright to mess around on, but I wouldn't invest too much money into it.

I would spend $320 on a new Stolen Wrap. The crank and other upgrades will probably take you into the 200 range. The next wave will bring you near the cost of a new decent whip. http://www.danscomp.com/101408.php?cat=BIKES

that is an ok dirt/street/park bike. i would be concerned about the size vs your hieght though.
if you want to upgrade, first overhaul all the bearings. the hubs, headset and bottom bracket are most likely unsealed and probably rusty by now. does it have brakes? if the brakes are in bad shape, replace the cables. if you want to ride brakeless (bad idea IMO), take the brakes and gyro parts off. get some decent 3-peice cranks with a US bottom bracket. you can't go wrong with Primo Powerbites. |

the bearings are fine and run real smooth/broken in. they're all sealed too. might just get stuff cleaned and regreased though. so a US bottom bracket is pretty much standard? i dont have to worry about spindle length and all that stuff? i'm just worried that if i get a new bb and spindle i wont have a straight chainline. unless i'm mistaken. i'm running a straight cable so i took off the gyro stuff. dumb question but what's a good length to run? i got 4 feet of housing from work. seems enough. |

any opinion on gusset or fsa? i have access to these for a good price...

if your haro is stock, i strongly doubt it has any sealed bearings. i mean sealed cartridge bearings, not a little rubber dust cover.
poverty cranks are pretty lousy. any crank with an unsealed BB is bad news. fsa makes a few cranks, which ones are you looking at? your brake cable should be as long as you need it to be. too short and it will get tangled up easily, too long and it will flop around. look through the bike pictures thread to see how long most people run their cables. |
