Question re: BMX Bike Helmets

Hi all,

Posted this question over on the Family/Recreational forum as well, but so far no responses.

My daughter had a bike accident this past week, went over the handlebars and landed face first on the sidewalk. She hit pretty hard, and even though she had conventional bike helmet on, her face got pretty banged up.

So now I'm looking to replace her old helmet, and I'm considering letting her try a full face BMX type helmet. Razor makes one that seems like it might work.

Concerns: Will a full face helmet be too hot and heavy for her casual rides in the neighborhood?

Trying to find something that will protect her face AND her head.

Any thoughts? Don't think she'll go along with wearing a hockey helmet and full face cage.LOL!

Thanks!

Full face are hot unless it is winter but then again I live in 100F+ weather. Chances are if she isn't afraid to get back on the bike she might not even want to ride it with a full face once she tries it out. She should just stick to the regular helmet. If she knows any better she will be cautious and not do whatever she did again. I'd only look into a full face if there was a broken face or stitches personally.

full face is a bit unnecessary. as fuzz said, she'll learn from her mistake and shouldnt end up doing that again for a while. a normal helmet will be fine

She probably will get over it quicker than I will.. :)

It took about 2 full days for the swelling to go down enough for her to open her left eye. With ice bags applied religiously. Her nose is healing up well so far. Her eyeglasses need to go in the shop, one of the lenses was scratched up significantly from the sidewalk, can't see through it.

Kids are kids, and I know this isn't the last time she's going to get skinned up doing something outside. Just the beginning...

Just hate the thought of going through this again anytime soon.

Thanks for the help, though. Will probably let her choose the style of helmet, as long as it meest safety certs, etc.

If you're looking for a helmet Bern makes some pretty sick ones.

Thanks for the suggestion. Not familiar with Bern, but will have to check them out.

We went shopping this afternoon, and she picked a black full face Razor helmet....I'm sure she'll want another conventional helmet like her old Bell one soon enough, but this one has really brought back her confidence.:)

Hopefully I haven't created a dare-devil in return! LOL! If so, will be needing something other than this lightweight Razor model!:)
