Fizzaly 07-27-10 06:10 PM

From what I understand, they're hard to find, and expensive when you do find one. I'd love to find one of the later threadless styled ones. I still have my arms and end bolts. I had one of the older sets, that used a threaded spindle, sort of like a one piece crank.

The only place I've ever seen selling a Black Widow spindle, is Porkchop BMX, but what they have is one of the square taper end spindles, for the Black Widow Lites, or whatever they called the kids' cranks.

Get some new cranks.

Im tring to find the spindle to do a rebuild of a bike i used to ride in the 90s and the blackwidows i have i bought in 95 i wanna use them more for sentimental reasons im one of those that never gets rid of the bikes i love i just throw them in storage for a decade forget about them then panic when i cant find parts to repair em

tyler11 07-28-10 01:50 PM

if i where you id get new cranks..................
you could probly get a set of profiles for like 50-80 bucks on the black market.
just ask around at your local chill spot/skatepark

Fizzaly 07-28-10 02:02 PM

i have profiles and a few sets of redlines i just needs me a spindle for my black widows its a project and im sticken with it

fuzzbox 07-28-10 05:55 PM

Get a new set of black widows then.

They're long out of production. Same problem as trying to find just the spindle.

Might be worth it to find a machine shop that can do heat treating, and see if they could machine a new spindle. Provide them with a crank arm, an end bolt, and a bearing, so they can check fit. I'd wrap as much of the arm as possible with some kind of a protective wrap, to keep it from getting scraped and nicked while it's at the shop.

grey that was gonna be my next step i still have the old spindle it broke off right where the sprocket sits the bearing race broke and i didnt notice it in turn wore a groove in the the sprocket shim which ate through the spindle one jump and it broke im thinkin they should be able to just copy it

I beg to differ. Maybe that make is out of production but if you look you can still get black widow cranks.

Outside of one place selling a set of Phat Black Widows with a Japanese bottom bracket, (for $350) the only Black Widow cranks I've seen for sale anywhere are the short Euro style cranks for kids' bikes. Not even places I know of that specialize in old parts have them.

CMcMahon 07-29-10 02:38 PM

What the hell is a Japanese bottom bracket?

Greyryder 07-29-10 10:51 PM

I was wondering the same thing.

Fizzaly 07-30-10 08:45 AM

Never minds guys i found one a local bike shop took an fatboy as ttrade in and it had black widows on it, i was in there buying something else and saw it get wheeled past me i alll but demanded he sell me the spindle which he did, apparently one of the pedal threads where stripped out so he had no problem parting it out paid 10bucks for it, two words HELL YEAH ive been looking for two months for one and thats how i find it im happy

CMcMahon 07-30-10 12:20 PM

Cool. It's too bad that those cranks are so terrible that even Odyssey employees recommend not running them, though.

Fizzaly 07-30-10 01:15 PM

ive never had a problem, i mean if you weigh anything over 160 pounds you shouldnt even really be considering alum crank arms on a bmx, i think that was the big failure they had is people just not knowing what equipment they needed, the original black widows where intended for race use not the jumping and what not they ended up being used for ive always liked them, for their performance and looks. I mean you throw any shimano crankset onto a bmx and start jumping with them and they will snap all over the place, especially the hollowtech ones

Tell that to every freestyle ride that rode Powerbites without problems over the past, what, 15 years?

Fizzaly 07-30-10 04:07 PM

totally different design, they never meant the 1st and 2nd gen widows for anything other than racing. i personally never really liked powerbites ive pretty much stuck with profiles on my jumping bikes and my widows for the racers
