Zap Pads bike
I usually hang in the Classic/Vintage forum, but figure the BMX gurus over here might be able to help me out.
My son just got a chrome-frame BMX that was being tossed. I remember having Zap Pads on my bmx in the early 80s, but didn't know they built a frame. From looking around it seems like Zap Pads were part of Hutch, and the handlebars are Hutch, so my guess is that it's a Hutch frame/fork. We just pulled it into the basement, but so far frame & fork look straight and rust-free.
It also has the plastic Z-Rims, which look like they're in good shape still. Is it safe to use these assuming that they're probably ~25 years old now?

pics would help on the id of the frame. try here to cross referance the frame and fork.

as for the z rims. they are still rideable, but thats it. they are brittle and should not be flexed heavily.
whatever you decide to do with it, dont toss the z rims. if you want to get rid of em let me know, i may be intersted in them.

A few pics: After looking it over a bit more, I'm wondering if it's just a decal the PO put on there; there are a few holes that look like maybe there was a headtube badge or something. I checked the pics on bikespot, and the rear triangle looks different from the Hutch frames on there. I'll keep looking thru the other pics in there and see if anything looks the same.

Awesome detective work! I found some more pics of an SX2000 last night and it looks almost identical.
I'm guessing there was a Schwinn SN# database somewhere; I'd like to see about getting the correct decal set.

Nice site! Looks like it's somewhere in the 80-82 range as rcsnipe thought last week. There was one '80 SX2000 that looks identical (other than decals) down to the components, but doesn't have a head tube gusset.
Still working on getting the seat tube off-letting it soak with PB Blaster for a few days; we really haven't had much time due to football/homework, but it'll be a fun restoration for my son to do. He wants to get a set of red skyways for it. We'll see....

Hey thanks for the link! I found through a link off Gene's FAQ that it was built May '79. Looking thru pictures, looks like an SX1000 with some upgraded components - the stock SX in pics has a one pc crank & steel stem, or he built it up himself.
I found a frame catalog that lists the weights of the 4130 and 1020 tubing (6 lb vs 6lb 13oz) so I can find out which it is pretty easily.
Teardown updates - still fighting with the seatpost; threads on the steerer are stripped pretty badly. Haven't done anything with the wheels yet, but the headset and BB seem to be OK after doing a quick cleanup.
