Custom bmx advice needed!

im kinda new here, so hello everyone.
ive just missed out on purchasing a sweet WTP thrillseeker bike on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
so now i want to build my own bike, but its my first time and i know nothing really, all this tech stuff confuses me and i dont know. i was wondering if u guys could help me. i want a really light bike, but at the same time, sorta strong and not cheap. i was thinking of getting a WTP thrillseeker or 4 seasons frame, what other products do i need and how much will it all cost excluding frames? i got about £200 after frame bought, can i get some good stuff with that?
be really glad if u guys could help
Cheers
Andy

hey if you want light then look at the jim celinski(??) frame, that's light! there aren't too many light street frames that retain their strength. dk weapon(ok), jim c. and there's a couple more i can't think of directly. you'll need to clarify what you want. euro bb/american, top mount brakes vs. chainstay mount. length of frame, things like that should be more important than color or brandname. i'll help as much as i can if you let me know!

a euro bb is the crank bearing that is threaded into the frame. all geared bikes use this style. smaller bearings are lighter, but wear quicker. the brake mount, if on the chainstay(bottom tube) with 9-25 or similar gear will be ground down from the chain moving across. thanks beerman for the list of frames! later guys!

CMcMahon 10-16-04 03:01 PM

No they don't. There's still American, there's FBM's Profile BB, there's Fly, T1, and S&M/Fit's Spanish BB, there's the press-fit BB used in a few European flatland frames, and there's the oversized ISIS BB that Haro is using on the 2005 signature frames, in addition to the Euro. And the bearing isn't threaded into the frame's bottom bracket; the bottom bracket cup is threaded in. As for the brake mounts, chainstay mounted brakes won't hit the brakes if you use Evolvers, Hombres, or Fly brakes (on most current frames, at least).

your reply is unclear. the frames that use spanish won't be around long, isis is mostly mtb(truvativ has similar) shimano is diff as is raceface, all of which will fit a bmx. the profile uses american bb tube and is threaded to itself. a euro is threaded into frame some do thread the actual bearing into the frame. while those are stronger, they are not readily avail. the outside races have to be ti or 4140 to last some time. i have seen almost every brake rubbed by chains including fly, evolvers etc. haro is trying to get everyone on the same page so there is some kind of standard in the industry. brake mounts on seat stays and a medium sized easy to replace bb is what they hope everyone agrees on. it'll happen ,maybe not soon but mark my words! originally i thought the kid needed a light frame. there is no such thing as light strong and cheap(inexpensive) there's always a trade off. light is also relative. if he rode an old zippo or something then everything is light to him at this point. anything sub 40# falls into this category.

CMcMahon 10-17-04 06:37 PM

The American does not thread in; the cups are pressed in.

The Spanish BB is most likely going to end up lasting for a while; it's new, it's going to be trendy, and it will probably end up being popular among the people who don't like the weakness of the Euro and the size of the American.

FBM's Profile BB is a Spanish-style BB in which the bearings are pressed directly into the frame - it just happens to be specifically suited for the outer diameter of the bearings that Profile uses.

The ISIS may be a MTB thing, but the fact of the matter is that it is still in use.

In my opinion, anything sub-6 pounds is light.

theomniscent 10-18-04 07:50 AM

i'm well aware of the differences between american and euro. i've heard from insiders of a short life span for the spanish. only time will tell though. it is a good compromise between the two others, so it could be the one to stick with. the fbm profile, i thought you were talking about the american sized bb that threads together made by profile at first. there is two isis version avail. one has "normal" bearings, and the overdrive has outboard bearings like xtr uses. both work well. i personally have euro's on two of my four bmx's and they are four and five years old each. they aren't that weak, some people just don't ride smooth enough i guess. sub 6 pounds is average for most dirt/street now. old hercules frames and such should not be considered bmx frames as they mimic a wrecking ball weight wise more than any bike frame. anyway you can still make a sub 6 pound frame weigh less than 30 complete so that is light for most people new school or old school.

My old Warpig is an 8-1/4 pound frame, but it felt good for the years that I rode it ('99-'03) and I'm 100% positive that it is, in fact, a BMX frame.

edit: But, yes, I had forgotten about that Profile Evolution BB setup for the American.

a little bmx humor. eastern bikes were too heavy for most people. all but the tall ones or the bigger kids. back then all the haro's and such were junk material quality. at the price of the eastern you could get a durable ride in the day. today they have stronger and lighter frames. but that was the schizzle for the day. stay up man!

CMcMahon 10-19-04 06:03 PM

They weren't nearly as heavy as the Thick Ratman, Morales BTS, the Gack Cannibal, or the chromo 2-Hip Pork though.
