I don't need top of the line just something that won't break when i go off jumps. i am going to buy a new bike about march and use that for tricks/jumps. than i will ride my old bike to school.

That or the DK Rage are both average entry level BMX racing bikes. They are NOT to do grinds on or any serious jumps, but can both take many good runs around the track and will hold up.

You will want to learn about some bike mechanics and keep everything running smooth and tight on the bike as you go along if you get one of those bikes. But, keep in mind that they are entry level - not great... But, not piss-poor Wal-Mart crud either.

Haro's aren't to bad for entry level. I started on a 2002 f3 and I beat the hell out of it. It held up well other than the bars and the sprocket . The sprocket just was worthless but the bars took several months. The new f3's have changed quite a bit since then but I will check and reply back.

i am only 13. i am about 5' and i weight about 90-95 pounds. i am scrawny

i was thinking about possibly buying a Free Agent Maverick. i looked at reviews for it. all the reviewers say its a really good bike. what do u think? ( i don't need the best bike. just one that won't break when i go off a small jump)

i also realize it won't be as good as the $300+ bike. tell me what u think

You would be set with an f3. I weighed a lot more than you do when I had mine and they have gotten stronger. Check out your local bikeshop.

i am going to mikes bike shop tomorrow. its a shop up town that sells Haro, Trek bikes like that. i will check out the Haro bikes. do u think they have Haro bikes under $200?

It's really on the racing side and isn't really going to be as durable. Also check out Danscomp.com they have some really good deals on some bikes right now.

The f3 will be a little above 200. probly about 20 to 30 bucks or so (thats what I paid for it) but always try to bargian. But check danscomp.com

It's a bummer they don't sell Haro's. The f2 is about 200. Its closer to what my 2002 f3 was but with a smaller frame.

It's mostly the parts and what they are made of. The racing bike is made to be light and fast and freestyle (weather it be street trail or vert) are made to be stronger and more duralbe and include more chromoly (the best material for many parts on a bike).

You can't really tell a good bike from a bad bike just by looking at it unless you are fairly experienced with bikes - especially bmx bikes. Most shops are clueless about bmx and will do more to confuse you than to help you - or will sell you garbage instead of something good.

Things to look out for:
1. NO 3-PIECE CRANKS! Good 3-piece cranks are at least $120.00. So what kind of 3-piece cranks are they putting on a bike that costs $200.00 total? Answer: something really dangerous. 1-piece cranks can be made very strong, especially for a smaller guy like you, for a much better price. You don't want money wasted on crappy add-on parts that just make the bike worse instead of better.

2. Rear brakes mounted on the chain stays. The chain stays are the lower tubes on the rear triangle of your bike. You don't want brakes down there and no well designed bike puts brakes there. It limits your upgradability. Rear brakes should be mounted on the upper tubes of the rear triangle (seat stays). Racing frames usually have them on TOP of the seat stays. This is fine for bmx racing and some light jumping.

3. Figure out if you want a bmx racing bike or a freestyle bike. Racing bikes are lighter, may cost a little less for an entry model, and may be better suited for your current size. BUT: They are much weaker and will wear out faster. They are still far superior to Wal-Mart stuff (Next, X-Games, Mongoose, Dyno, etc.) but if you decide to get serious about jumping or if you want to put some pegs on and grind, then they are completely inappropriate.

Freestyle bikes will almost ALWAYS cost more at the entry level. They usually include pegs and a gyro which immediately adds about $30-$50.00 to the cost of the bike. Often front brakes are included as well. A bike like the DK Cincinatti is one of my favorite entry level freestyle bikes and really has no major flaws. It's a good one that you could upgrade to 3-piece cranks and really good wheels and then be really, really happy on for a few years. But, it isn't as light as a bmx racing bike, and it does cost more than you may be willing to spend.

A story: When I first started (18+ years ago) I knew nothing and there was no Internet. I went into a shop and got a $200.00 racing bike. I never raced. I put pegs on it, got front brakes, a new stem, a Gyro (they were just invented!). Put all that stuff on myself - which wasn't easy since I was pretty clueless and didn't have anyone to ask. Then I started flatlanding. The bike was pretty lame I realize now, but it worked, and it worked well for what I was doing. My point: You don't need a perfect bike, you just need something that will work and is safe. If you want to ride, be prepared to WORK on your bike yourself. Once you know how to do the work yourself, you won't need to pay someone else to do stuff for you. This saves you money, but also ensures you can make your bike run perfect.

Finally: WalMart bikes are crap... But, they aren't crap because of the bike themselves. They are crap because the bikes are very poorly designed. They actually use bad angles, flashy parts that may look nice, but don't work well. They don't have decent mechanics assemble or care for them (usually). They quite often use the cheapest metal and materials to make them as well. But, most of all, they are designed poorly so that your money is not used wisely. A GOOD bike could be at Wal-Mart... But, it wouldn't sell well. It wouldn't be flashy enough to move off the sales floor so they wouldn't sell it! It would be a nice simple design, with simple, decent quality parts. It would be just as expensive as the bling cycles and no kid would want it to skid around on.

NOTE: Mosh Brass 2 Star - $210.00 at www.danscomp.com - Looks like a very good bike for the money.
DK Cincinnati - $220.00 at www.danscomp.com - Also a good bike for the money.
Both are freestyle bikes that come with front/rear pegs and front/rear brakes with good design. The Mosh is a 2003 model, but is very, VERY likely a $300.00+ bike originally that is marked down. The 3-piece cranks on it may actually be decent.
