bunnyhop..
i'm pretty new to bmxing- i got my first bike in august or so, basically i'm tryingto get decent enough to show my face on a bike at a skatepark. one thing i've been trying though is to bunnyhop- yeah i can lift the front pretty high, but how do you lift the back end to actually get air? i've tried rolling my wrists kinda thing, but that only works up to a few inches. i get up to about 50 degrees and then try and throw my weight forward but it doesn't work. any ideas?

use the search option next time.. you can show your face at a skatepark and not know how to do anything, thats how you get good. Just have a good time. Just practice your bunny hops.. practice, practice, practicew. Your trying to lift your bike UP, not throw it forward.. so dont throw your weight forward, try to lift the bike upward.

You kinda have to unweight the back end of your bike and pull up the tail at the same time. I guess I just take it for granted, cause it is really hard to explain. It is a lot easier if you have pedals with decent traction too.

There was a thread recently on this, it's tricky to explain, as once you can do it, you don't think twice about it. I'm a returner BMX'r but this might help ;
ok, say you're riding towards a kerb, 1/2 foot or so (don't recommend clearing obstacles until you can get a decent bit of clearance though)
1) I lean forward & tighten grip, so you're in... like a ready to pounce position...
2) at the crucial moment, pull hard up on the bars like you're going to wheelie (but not peddling, you're feet need to be in a comfortable stance), at the same time jumping up with your feet ; at that point, kind of lean a little forward, slightly pressing the bars away from your body ( this shifts weight from the back to the front, so the back wheel lifts)
All being well, both wheels are roughly the same height off the ground, for a nice smooth landing.... or face plant
Dunno if that helps, 1 time it will just click, and you can do it no worries then , happy riding all

What helped my friend alot was just riding along at a slow pace you press your hips against the bars. Then you angle your feet down push on them. Now lean forward just a little as you try to pull your feet up so you pick up the back wheel. Then you can combine this motion when you pull the front wheel up but dont put your hips against the bars. Also just get the motion of having your front wheel go up and then your back by goin off curbs.

okay one thing you have all wrong. bunny hopping isnt bringing your front wheel up and then pushing you weight forward. A buny hop is jumping with both wheels at the same time. To do a buny hop you have to sorta bend down and get closer to the ground and then jump up pushing off on your pedals. then as you raise into the air, you hold on to your handle-bar and hold your seat with your legs.
What you WANT to do is called a J-HOP. To do this one you ahve to sorta bring your weight back behind your seat and then push yourself forward and push your handle bar in front of you. In this position you will be a bit behind your seat but as you bring the bike down to land it, you should move forward a bit or simply bring ur chest to your handle bar when in the air and push your handle-bar away from you as you land and absorb the shock wiht your legs...a

Who cares what its called.. yea, you want to lift your front tire first.. thats how you'll get higher. and when you lift both your tires at them same time you dont hold your seat with your knees, you just jump.

Front wheel first, then rear wheel.
I recommend hitting small things like 1" tall concrete, or where a handicapped ramp meets a curb, or the end of a driveway, where it meets the side walk. Let those small things help you get the front wheel up, then the back wheel up. It teaches the proper motion and timing of when to pull up for a bunnyhop. As you do it more and more then the bunnyhop without any outside help, will just be natural.

Why do people confuse bunnyhops and prohops?
There is a such thing as a Bronco hop pal. Its a backwards prohop. Not like a fakie prohop, but were you lift the back end up then hop up with the front instead of the normal bring front end up and hop up with the back. If need be, I'll take pictures of myself doing both. I can't bunnyhop high, but I can prohop 3-3 1/2 high ( 9 Skateboard Decks ). I can't really bronco hop worth **** though
Edit: If you have seen the Fit Puerto Rico video I beileve its Brian Foste or Chase Hawk that does a Fakie Bronco hop over a set of 5 stairs.

What's a nollie then?
It's kind of hard for me to bunny hop on even a somewhat light mountain bike, that's one of the reasons I'm going to buy a BMX.
Usually, I seem to get both wheels up at the same time, but I can do it getting front up first, or back up first, equally high.

Nollie to anything is pretty damn nice; collest one I've ever seen must have been four or five years ago: Byron Anderson, nollie truckdriver off a seven-foot subbox into a tranny.

nollie: ya that stuff is pretty nice.
But as someone mentioned before, try J-HOP onto a curb first and then get yourself a deck or something that you can put in the middle of the road to practice (something that will not break if you hit it with a bike). Other then that keep your feet well on your pedals and go for a curb!!!

Bunnyhops & Nollies - PERIOD
No pro calls them anything but that. Not one. Every pro remembers being 10 and calling them different names. But, within bmx and freestyle there is only the bunnyhop, and there is only one proper way to do it. Some people get a lot higher than others, but not one rider lifts both wheels at once. That is what 'little kids' do before they know how to bunnyhop correctly.
Likewise, little kids call them pro hops, broncos, j-hops, or any of the other names before they know to stop renaming a trick that has had a name for years. Bunnyhop. A rabbit doesn't lift all it's legs at once - front legs, then rear legs, which is how a bunnyhop works.
Now, the nollie is a name taken straight from skateboarding (like the half-cab as well). It is a bunnyhop where you lift the rear wheel first. Basically you do a rolling endo, then lift the front wheel up. I haven't watched many street videos lately, but do NOT confuse a nollie with a rollback bunnyhop. When you are doing a rollback and do a regular bunnyhop, front wheel first, it is just a rollback bunnyhop. It is only a nollie if the rear wheel comes off the ground first, then the front wheel comes up.
J-hop, gears, wheelies? I wonder if some people even own bmx bikes and if so how long they have actually been serious about riding. A lot of contradictions going on from people who seem not to know anything about anything.

Thank you beerman. It is a bunnyhop, always has been, always will be. As a side note to all of you out-of-the-loop kids out there, there is no such thing as a catwalk. Riding on your back tire while pedalling is a wheelie. Riding on your back tire while not pedalling is a manual. I hope that clears some stuff up.

i can do a bunny hop kind of. i learned (more like accidentaly found out) how to bunny hop about 20 minutes ago. well its not the good kind. with the front wheel up than the back. i can do the 2 wheels at once (about an inch off the ground)
any way. to get higher do u snap the handlebars up harder. when i "bunnyhop" i crouch down and explode upward while holding onto the handlebars. while i spring up i kind of jump of my pedals (to unweight the back)
i know its not the right kind of bunny hop but can u give me any pointers
