convert to sealed?

hey do yall think i would be able to convert my headset, crank and hubs to sealed berrings?
would i end up paying enough just to buy a new bike? i know i would have to get a new hub and re lace it but i think i know how to do that......and a new bottom bracket and a new headset....how much do you think i would be looking at? (money)

hey,
why are sealed bearings better? and whats a bottom bracket?

jimkarthauser 11-07-04 02:33 PM

sealed bearings are definitely better. they run smoother, spin faster, last longer, cleaner and easier to install. and a 'BB' is an abbreviation of a bottom bracket, that big hole in the bottom of your frame that the crank spindle goes through. a crank what the pedals go on, and the pedal is that square thing that you put your feet on when you ride your bike. i take it you do actually ride/own a bike?

im sure u had a time in your life when u didnt know wat a bottom bracket was. you assume that just because i didnt know wat it was i dont know $*#t? cuz ur wrong. and i knew sealed bearings were better i asked what it was like as in what makes it so different to other berings?

Um loose ball sucks! Sealed is the way to go. you can replace the bb and headset but will probably just have to deal with the hubs until they die. You usually cant convert them but will have to buy new ones. So kill them and buy a new wheelset.

sorry mate, i was only messin wiv ya. sealed bearings are different in that they are cartridges, 'sealed' units, (like skateboard bearings) so they are cleaner to put in, and you can't get dirt and grime in them, so they run smoother.

Yea, you can't just put sealed bearings in a headset made for un-sealed.. it doesent work like that.. So you won't be converting anything, simply upgrading.. you need a new headset, new bb, and new hubs.. Dont try to rig anything, just get new stuff.

Haro Rider 09: Let's start off by asking what kind (specific) of bike do you have now? Some bikes are definitely worth upgrading the parts on, but if you don't have good rims, then what is the point of spending 5 hours rebuilding nice hubs into the crappy rims?

If you don't have 3-piece cranks, I don't think you will be finding any sealed bottom brackets to put on your bike, so you need 3-piece cranks.

A sealed headset it a toughie. Headsets take a lot of up/down force against the bearings which is not what cartridge bearings were designed to handle. So you may be better off with a loose ball bearing headset. But, some people love their sealed bearing headsets. As I said, it is a tough question.

If your bike really needs everything upgraded, then it may be time to sell it on eBay and pick up a $400.00-$500.00 bike. The more expensive bike will come with decent sealed components, full chromoly frame/fork and better components. You may still want to upgrade stuff later on, but then you won't be in the situation where EVERYTHING needs to be upgraded, but just small stuff. Like your headset.
