Ghetto Mods for your Bike

have you done anything to your bike that is like ghetto-fied? i put pencil erasers on top of my spokes to stop them from puncturing the innertube... i just got bored of trying over and over again to build my rim right, and im gonna buy new ones anyways. so yeah, anything youve done to your bike that has made it kinda ghetto-ish???

Freebyrd 11-26-04 08:29 AM

yeah i have a one bike that i use v brakes on and every time my right foot would go up past the seatstays, the little curved metal part of the brake would scrape me in the ankle, so i stuck a twist tie on it to put it against the seatstay.

Maybe we can fight about it again(I'd prefer not), but I have rubber bands on my brakes instead of springs. That's pretty ghetto..

haro_rider09 11-26-04 02:42 PM

lol dont they slip?

thats not pretty ghetto, thats extremely super ghetto.

arboc! 11-26-04 03:28 PM

one time we wanted my friend to come riding with us, but he had broken part of his bb, and we super glued his crank on.

bmichaelx 11-26-04 03:57 PM

One time I was trying to pound out my headset cup in my frame so after trying to pound it out with a 3 pound hammer we put a pipe through the headtube in the frame and picked up the frame and banged the pipe on the ground(so that it would hit out the cups) and after 5 hits on the ground it flew up in the air and it came down after 10 whole seconds. It must have been 100 feet in the air. This isn't realy a gehto thing on my bike but it still fits in the thread.

they work beautifully.

Nah - I'm sure it works, it's just ghetto as he said!

I put hot glue in the back of my plastic seat. Since I do a lot of upside down tricks and rip through seats about once a month, the hot glue makes the seat more comfortable to hold and keeps it together for about an extra month or two. I ripped a padded seat in half in about 3 hours... no padding for me ever.

arboc! 11-26-04 05:15 PM

one time i destroyed my seat guts and the seat kept sliping to like a 45 degree angle, so i taped the front of the seat to the top tube.

CMcMahon 11-26-04 05:57 PM

I've had brake housing held together with pacing tape before, but I can't think of anything like that on my bike right now.

edmej123 11-26-04 10:39 PM

lol, lots of smart stuff. anyways, when i was trying to put the seat post into the frame, it wouldnt go so i had to pount it in with a hammer, the only problem being that the seat was built into the post (literally) so my friend wanted to try and broke the back part of the seat off, so we super glued it and after i went up on a curb, the back of the seat hit me and broke off and it stabbed my rear...

i now have an Odyessey Linear Slic Kable now, but when i was building up my bike bit by bit, before i had a proper brake cable, i was using three short outer cables (they were short because they were from mountain bike deraillier outer cables. And the cable itself was stuffed from getting pushed through the outers. It did work but when i did barspins, the brakes were almost locked

jRC1088 12-02-04 07:37 AM

Haha, i don't have to worry about that. I dont put brakes on my bikes.

dirt dude 12-13-04 01:05 PM

i broke teh thread inside my crank arm so i welded the pedal on ghetto improvisation i say

david land 12-13-04 01:54 PM

vtjim 12-13-04 02:26 PM

I almost duct-taped a thermometer to my bar but then i got a computer with a thermometer... :)

sxe fbm rider 12-15-04 12:35 PM

Do you ride a bmx bike? Or just your commuter?

JMC 12-15-04 02:00 PM

for awhile i had cigarette filters on the end of my brake cables cuz they always cuz my legs open.

bxbmx 12-15-04 07:39 PM

i kno some ppl who sand down the paint, to make it less attractive, also a dude who put a tennis ball in the spokes.

KrisPistofferson 12-16-04 03:54 AM

My rear rack is connected to the seat tube with zip-ties. My "parking brake"is a rubber band on my drop bars. My handle bar tape is thick rubber electrical tape. I repaint my bikes with matte black rustoleum, 'cuz it looks Mad Max smooth and it deters thieves who tend to go for Trek-like looks. I made my own panniers out of Swiss army surplus canvas bags, and connected them to my rack with zip-ties. I connected my front fender to the fork with zip-ties. Surprisingly, none of these things looks bad, actually, the bike looks like an A.N.T. bike now! "Ghetto" isn't necessarily a POS, it just isn't something Lance would ride. I'm thinkin' about becoming a superhero, only, instead of webs I'll have a pocket full of zip-ties.

charlesw 12-16-04 04:31 AM

Kris, show us a pic of your bike!

My bike isn't that ghetto, but I u-lock stuff to myself when I need to carry it home:
http://charles.loveofcolor.org/bikef...hold-tires.jpg
The ghetto level would have increased to maximum intensity if I had used nimble branches to tie them to myself.

bxbmx 12-16-04 08:13 AM

might as well tape a refridgerator to ur bike...

sxe fbm rider 12-16-04 10:51 AM

I need to get a U-lock holder type thing for my bag.
