They aren't. They are the same price basically as the larger ones.

Since almost all sprockets are machined out of a single piece of aluminum, the cost is not the material, but the machining and effort of the build. Add packagaing, shipping, and markup, and you are within a few dollars cost from 20 tooth up to 45 tooth. The only exception really is the few titanium sprockets on the market that actually use material that costs a fair amount of cash.

Now, in my opinion an average sprocket should run between 20 and 30 bucks. Since everyone is switching AWAY from 44 tooth sprockets, it puts a new demand on the smaller ones which a lot of people are buying and allows manufacturers to drive the price way up.

If you check flatlanfuel.com you will actually find better prices on small sprockets which will work very well for street if you aren't to hard on your sprocket. Flatlanders have been using sub 39 tooth sprockets for many years. I think I've used 33 or smaller for about 8 years now.
