BMX bike with 26" wheels?
My son rode BMX until he went to college, and now is looking for a commuter bike and likes the BMX frames. He was wondering if anyone made a BMX with 26 in. wheels. If anyone knows of where to start looking I would really appreciate their help.

Jump bikes are pretty much BMX frames with 26 (or occasionally 24") wheels. It's not an area I really know a lot about but I think Kona do a jump frame, barracuda certainly do (no idea of quality), DMR, one-on-one are names that ring bells.

Well, norco make the TWO50 and ONE25 dirt jumpers, that have awsome parts, and are all easily changeable on the smaller dirtjumper type frames so he can have pretty much any style he wants. Not sure if it would make a good commuter though.

Here is the pic of the TWO50 It's a little bit high tech for commuting if you know what i mean, it is designed entirely for supercross type riding, but if it's somethign he likes, hey! its a great bike. :)

Jean - it's probably worth doing a search on BSX - I think that's the name for what's basically BMX racing on larger bikes. I wouldn't expect much in the way of braze-ons .

Jean - I checked with a youngster who lives round the corner and who's opinion I trust and he recommended looking at:

26" bmx bikes were somewhat common during the 80's. These is the only people that I know of that still make them.
http://www.firemansbikes.com/original.htm Most manufacturers offer a bmx cruisers with 24" wheels and usually just a rear brake. I'm not sure a bmx bike is the best for commuting. I ride a singlespeed MTB. It's alot like a bmx but has brakes front and rear and a frame that lets me get proper leg extention while seated. I'm not sure most bmx's allow this. Redline makes a singlespeed MTB called the Monocog that's about $350. Your son might what to check it out. |
er mmmm i like wet fish

Try Thursday bikes located in Idaho. Sweet 26 inch bmx custom bikes. I have seen his bikes in person and they are quality.

one thing he could do is get a bike where he can have 2 gear ratios on the bike. like a flip flop hub, or cassetes that have 2 different size cogs as one piece.(sorta like the surly dinglecog and i've seen free wheels like that too) If he does horizontal drop outs, they may long enough to do 2 ratios on the same chain length. have one ratio for commuting and run the seat high, the other for tricks and have the seat low.

eastern night train, i ride it and its relatively a bmx with 26 inch wheels. a lil pricey if all youre looking for is a commuter tho

if it has suspension and possibly gears, it's a dirt jumper, not a BMX. these are 16" bmx's. http://www.firemansbikes.com/
