Beach Cruiser BMX conversion.. PART 1

I have a junker beach cruiser bike which I acquired on the cheap and I plan on installing some better components on it to make it into some kinda BMX abomination. Some may say this is ridiculous but I'm only doing it for fun. I gotta be honest and say that my knowledge of bikes and bike components is relatively limited. Anyway, first things first.. the cranks.

The bike has a typical American bottom bracket and it seems are if there are a lot of options for me to replace the one-piece-crank setup I have now. I've read about the "TruVativ Bottom Bracket Adapter American to Euro Conversion Kit" and also checked out the "Pyramid M x 3 Piece Bottom Bracket Set Conversion Kit".

I found this American 3-pc Sealed BB (Product #455021 on Danscomp) that I think could also be a good starting point too.

I am willing to spend about $100 total for the BB/crankset total.

Looking for some opinions / advise / recommendations. Thanks!

Oh yeah... forgot to mention, 26" wheels on this thing. If that makes a difference at this stage.

About a $115 at Danscomp will get you a Redline Flight three piece crank and a bottom bracket to fit it. They still make American style bottom Brackets, so you don't need an adapter.

Stick with 26" wheels. It's just going to throw everything off, trying to put smaller wheels on it. Besides, the first BMX cruisers had 26" wheels. If I were doing it, I'd put a V brake adapter on the back, and get a rigid MTB fork with V brake mounts, and make it an urban assault style bike, with BMX parts.

Awesome.. Thanks for the advise.

I have purchased the legendary (and now discontinued?) Redline Flight cranks! I couldn't find the set that comes with the BB on Danscomp but I did on PlanetBMX for $120.

I like the idea of changing out these weak forks for something meaty that I can also mount a brake on. If I replace the forks does that mean I can convert to a threadless headset as well? I suppose I need to measure the head tube before I buy anything else.

Yeah, the bottom brackets are separate, at Dan's.

You can switch to threadless, but that fork probably has a one inch steer tube, which might limit what you can get for it. It might be pretty hard to find a stem for a 1" threadless steerer.

I know the other beach cruiser I disassembled had a 1 1/8" steer tube, I am hoping the same on this one. I haven't checked yet but I will tonight. If it's 1 inch then I could probably make due with the threaded headset.

I also purchased a V-Brake adaptor Plate so I can put some decent brakes on this thing and ditch the coaster brake.

What, nothing anodized?:) actually i'm digging the all black look...just needs some retro matching or contrasting pads
I've been gathering parts to do a similar build, a black Huffy cruiser frame i got for free, nothing fancy but i am lusting after a
a LandingGear or Earth Cruiser fork.
As for brakes i Have some old salvaged V-brake bosses that i plan to braze onto the frame and fork when i get access to a torch...a Huffy will be perfect to practice on;)

Needs a 22.2 stem and some KOS cruiser bars to complete the look
