Bikes from when I was a kid
 

I was in the local shop that I bought all my bike parts in as a kid yesterday. I decided to take a look at the bmx bikes since my boy is turni 12. All the brands I had and loved are gone. No more gt or dyno. Mongoose is at Walmart. What happened? I've been out of the loop.

are those bikes still good compared to today's standards?

GT's are still around and going strong - especially in the racing scene. I know they sold off Dyno a while back and Toys r us had the brand for a while. I don't remember how long GT kept Robinson around, but I know they are no more. I still remember my old GT mach one from back in the day. I actually owned that bike for 21 years, and finally gave it to a student after fully rebuilding it. Some of those older frames that weren't considered "cool" back then actually have the same specs and geometry of today's "cool" frames. The cool ones from back in the day, like the Specialized Fat Boy, they look ridiculous by today's standards.

But most of the big brands are still around: Haro, Hoffman, GT, Redline. Diamondback just ditched their team riders, so I don't know if that's pointing toward things to come for the company as a whole or not. Check out bmxmuseum.com for a trip down memory lane.

I'll throw a few more out there that I raced at least once and spent some time riding... Spent a most of my seasons on the original goose, the Profile, the Hutch, and the Cyclecraft.
Mongoose (original) - sold it to finance the supergoose
Supergoose (original) - sold it to finance the Hutch
Mongoose Pro Class - borrowed, broke it and they replaced it for him under warranty
GT - Forget which one but it was borrowed, didn't like it enough to buy it.
Diamondback - when Harry Leary was riding for them... borrowed, felt just like a supergoose and was too small for me.
Schwinn Sting (or was it Stingray? this was almost 35 years ago) borrowed it and liked it but couldn't come up with the cash to buy one
CYC Stormer - broke it
Kuwahara - broke it
JMC - borrowed too flexible
SE PK Ripper 1 & 2 (belonged to a friend. Loved the original hated the 2)
Torker - borrowed didn't like the geometry
Profile Cruiser - still have it
Patterson - borrowed, Bb was too low for my taste
Hutch ProRacer (XL?) - still have it
Cyclecraft (Custom built) - still have it

Had a Skyway TA. The longer one with white frame. Still have the frame though I'm not sure why.

It had CW handlebars, Uni mini seat, Araya rims with hollow axles, Redline "forklift" neck, super comp III tires, I believe DiaCompe brakes, can't remember the cranks or pedals.

My brother had the Schwinn Predator. If I remember right the front "snake skin" tire was wider than the rear.

IRC Agressor, comp II & III tires, Araya, Ukai, Wienman, and ProClass rims, Skyway Graphites, ACS Zytel rims, Phil Wood, GT, ACS, Campognolo, Meiche, Suntour, & Shimano hubs. Redline, Profile, and Tioga cranks. Original Kashimax seat. Diacomp 1000 brakes with Kool Stop pads. Gt or Fredz bars... DK xl Stem. Ame grips. For pedals Shimano DX, Hutch, or Suntour MX? with Trog cages.

Went through a few toughneck stems, pulled the head off of a redline stem. Still have a 6 bolt MCS Spyder stem somewhere along with various aluminum 3 piece crank armss from younger days..

I think they are still good compared to today's standards...

All I ever had were Nth hand department store junkers. Usually pieced together from stuff I bought or traded from other kids in the neighborhood.

I only had a Skyway TA as a child. :(

I had a PK Ripper!! I bought the frame and forks, then had a hell of a time finding a seat post for it!
My first Bmx was a Haro, I don't remember the model. I also had a Mongoose Menace.
The last Bmx I owned was a 96 Hoffman Condor. That was a sweet ride!

First ride I had was a Free Agent, then I went Cycle Craft, loved that frame set up. Kept that and got an S&M Holmes, cracked the frame in about a 3 months...After that I went and got a Block...loved it..best ride I ever had...but all through the years I have had at one point in time a Thruster tri - power, GT Mach One, Dyno, Torker, Hutch "Judge and Hollywood", Brackens....I'm still looking to get another Block...

I got out of riding a long time ago, but I'm currently building a '96 Free Agent Eluder. I was born in '80 so old school is probably different for everyone. I like that I have a frame that was made when I was a kid, brings back good memories. I saw a mint elf from the 90's on craigslist. I like the bike but he's asking a lot. I may through an offer at them

If you want some old-school style bmxes that are very strong, look at Trek BMX'es, I prefer Vert or Subvert

Wrong shop for what your looking for it seems. Our bike shop is still building new performers etc. They also have the pro mongoose's! I wouldnt ride anything else regardless.
