Borderlands

I play a few games of Go against the computer every day.

But mostly I play Borderlands. I have dozens of games, and Borderlands is several years old. A few months ago, after I got my new video card, I started playing again. It looks better, although it's quite plain compared to something like Skyrim.

I have been wondering why. It's not that it's a bad game, it's a great game. But I am not going to tell you how many hours I've played it. It's a lot.

I was chatting with a guy on the internet I was playing with (most of the play is co-op) and said I'd rather die than live there. I was serious. I hate deserts, basically I hate everything the game has, if I had to live there. Capricious, corrupt and often sadistic authority, a barren and massively hostile environment, constant violence. People need to eat, and the only thing you see is skags. Which look like they would taste poisonous. In the few places there are people, they hate living there, and who could blame them.

My favorite quote from the game: "I hate this planet, it smells like hemorroids wrapped in bacon."

As a game, I literally play it every day now. Over the years I've become expert at it. Most of the people that show up are newbies, and I love showing them all the tricks and skills. Actually, I've learned I need to avoid making it sound like it's a classroom and I'm a teacher.

I like the beginning of the game, where you start with no skills and crap guns. But if you know what you are doing... That's where your experience counts the most. You can get to level 69, I rarely take a character past 30, most of them (I have dozens) are lower than that.

I admit it's weird. I have an expensive video card, and my game barely keeps it awake. There's a bazillion other games, some of them are better in this way or that.

But Borderlands (the first, not the sequels) has a hold on me. Just been wondering why.

I played one round of Fortnite battle royale the other day, looks like the paid version (single/multi vs environment) will be similar to borderlands? I haven't been keeping up on my gaming in the last few years. Skyrim and Mount & Blade:Warband (and its prophesy of pendor mod) have been the biggest time sinks (waiting on Bannerlord).

I would not have thought that I would see a fan of great mod Prophesy of Pendor here. Indeed, it would be good if the developers of Bannerlord have learned some from themselves ideas. And Bordarlands is also quite a good coop game, especially the second part

Why not chat w/ the guy who made it? (at)mikeyface on Twitter
I don't know anything about Borderlands, but I watch Mikey Neumann's video essays on movies and find them (on the whole) insightful and humorous.
