"SOLO" : the Stinker

I haven't seen this film but it is receiving bad press amongst Star Wars fans and in terms of box office revenue, it's frozen in carbonite comparitively to other Star Wars films. I haven't seen any of the newer films of this franchise.

As someone who has seen the film, the problem with it is that they did a Han Solo story with a actor who was not believable as Han Solo. A little rewriting and this movie could have been a Lando story and it would have been awesome. Of course Daily Caller would still pan it because of Glover doing a music video calling out systemic racism.

I can't think of a single prequel that worked (as anything other than a cash cow). There must be one, somewhere.

It's probably more difficult than it looks to find a young actor with real charisma. Look at the much younger Harrison F... oh, wait... link to Daily Caller. It's not a movie review, it's a cultural revisionism review.

Never mind.

Well played, sir.

I thought Rogue One was pretty good.

If current Chris Pratt was 10 years younger, he might work.

As it was, they should have gone with Ansel Elgort.

Try seeing
Godfather II, the Robert DeNiro half as the up and coming gangster.

Seen it many times. Big fan of the entire Godfather trilogy. In the context of Godfather II the back story with DeNiro felt like it was tacked on, too long and unnecessary to the rest of the movie. It would have been great cut into Godfather I if Coppola dared to pull the sort of stunt other directors have made to revise or update their earlier classic movies. A Godfather ver. 1.2.

But whadda I know? I actually enjoyed Apocalypse Now: Redux as much as the other versions. And I like Godfather III.

And I also thought Sofia Coppola was fine in her limited role in G3. I don't get all the criticism. The character was only peripheral and only needed to look the part, which Sofia does very well (having grown up in and around NYC, I have a soft spot for that look). And Winona Ryder wouldn't have done any better. She'd have been totally out of place, a nerdy cute neurotic Jewish girl trying to pretend she's Sicilian (I also have a thing for nerdy cute neurotic Jewish girls, another holdover from having grown up in New Yawk).

Winona was wonderfully awful in Coppola's Dracula, and I love that movie because it's so gloriously unapologetically and unrepentantly campy. Which is exactly what I love about Godfather III. It's gloriously campy melodrama. It was perfect for that era, the slimy post-Reagan '80s downslide. In that context it made perfect sense, the notion of criminals trying to clean up their acts and present themselves as respectable captains of industry. It's subtly ironic satire.

So my taste is suspect. I just don't think Godfather II was anything special just because of DeNiro's back story segment. And Coppola has admitted he shouldn't have made either sequel. I think he's wrong. I like all three equally.

Dunno, didn't see that one, but prob ably so since the James Bond Franchise usually produces enjoyable movies but Quantum of Solace was downright awful.

You are entitled to your opinion on Gofather 3 as well as Apocalypse Now: Redux; I do not share it.

Yeah, those guys probably read articles like this one and come to some sort of assessment based on it. I don't read DC often, only when a link from another site refers.

Yeah, I lost respect for shills like Jerry Bruckheimer, Kathryn Bigelow and Tony and Ridley Scott when they morphed into propagandists and cheerleaders for the military/industrial complex Eisenhower warned against.

Regarding that DC "review" of the Solo movie, the problem is the source for the article. The Daily Caller courts the very same racist and misogynist demographic who harassed "The Last Jedi" actor Kelly Marie Tran until she closed her social media account recently. DC tries to be coy about it by disclaiming any responsibility for the views written by guest writers. But there's no mistaking the intent of publishing a racist/misogynist screed in the guise of a movie "review" with comments such as "...Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), a superfluous character who is used to round out the film’s racial quota...", and whining that the movie is "...full of weak male characters and steeped in politically correct orthodoxy", while complaining that Rey is too capable and independent to suit his preference for a damsel in distress. The Daily Caller is paranoia porn for insecure bros who crave daily affirmation of their delusions of being persecuted rather than worshiped.

I suppose the mere maintained existence of a venue like Daily Caller is a knee-jerk countermeasure to the unfortunate modern phenomenon of low testosterone / sperm count men and radicalized green haired identity politicked feminists. I haven't visited DC enough to make a thorough assessment of the place. I like to read a publication and develop a feel for it over time then reason some sort of judgement about it, and there is already so much else to read out there as it is. I cite the article based on knowledge of intentional long term social engineering based in media and it appeared to make commentary on those type of efforts albeit in an over-the-top WWF / Don Cherry kind of way..
