Anyone that knows the meaning of a critical or judgement statement. Imagine if you were charged with a crime without being told what infraction you committed. Would the punishment be effective in preventing a future occurrence?

Recently watched "Won't you be my neighbor" previously mentioned by bikecrate. Very well done by the film maker Morgan Neville. He has also done two others that I enjoyed "Twenty feet from stardom" about backup singers and "the best of enemies" about William Buckley and Gore Vidal"

Lost In Translation -- 8/10

Yeah, I waited all this time to finally watch it. Borrowed a copy on VHS just to see if my old Sony VCR still works. It does.

What's to say... it's as charming as fans claim. Somehow Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson manage to make the improbable work. And, being a fan of both shoegaze and kitschy music, I even liked the soundtrack, which was credited with giving a second life to shoegaze and dream pop. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd agree with the critics who found the depiction of Japanese people in their own place and culture to be a bit trite and, if not outright disrespectful, at least unengaged and out of sync with the rest of the movie. Seems like it wouldn't have taken much effort to make the Japanese characters and extras more human and relatable. It didn't quite stoop to the level of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's, which practically ruins that movie. But I can't give Lost in Translation a 9, as much as I'd like to. And I'm not sure I'd be anxious to watch it again if it happened to pop up on TV while flipping channels.

B-b-but what about your alleged "rules" for properly rating a movie on this thread?

There are always exceptions

I gave this one special dispensation due to it being so horribly bad. On this occasion, being succinct seemed the best description. Besides, if I rated it it would just be a continuing sequence of synonyms of abysmal.

Could be worse. Could be my 10,000 word snark essay on the teeth-grinding awfulness of Lars von Tryingmypatience's "Melancholia."
