Aug 9, Made it to portland.

Made it tp portland today. The train ride was quite interesting. there was the usuall assortent of charictors. The first was Dewey the coach attendant thaat didnt want to be at work. he was quite abbuisive to people so much that i found it amusing. The first guy to sit next to me was cool but talked non stop so i kinda tuned him out and kinda listned at the same time thankfully he got off after a few hours. I had the seat to my self the first night and kinda got a decent sleep. The second day a fellow from minesota sat down and we got along fine.

spent the time looking out the windo, reading , and sleeping off and on I kept looking for a look at some touring bikers as we rolled along hy 2 finially neaqr malta montana I spotted 2 cyclists headed east one with a bob and one with pannieers. Some hopw that was enough to jumpstart my mind on the journey ahead.

during one extended station stop I got a good look in the baggage car and saw my bike and duffel bag, So i knew i had everything id left home with.

Got off the train and picked up my stuff. I talked to a guy running the cabs and asked if there was a van available to take me over to the hostile. He said just ask the red cap for bill. soon i was just sittin on a bench waitin for the baggage to get unloaded. a guy drove up in a van type shuttle and asked if i was the guy with the bike? I said yes but was waiting for it to get unloaded. I did tell him to take another fare and id call him when i was ready. I waited in line and got my belonings and saw the guy was still waiting so we loaded it all up and headed out. It turns out the hostile was about 10 blocks away only I could have walked over and dumped off my stuf and walked back and unboxed the bike, put it together and rode it over, but the ride was nice anywaY.

the fellow tells me he started the meter while he was waiting for me I was a bit surprised and would have complained but he was a missing an arm and felt sorry for him. the fair came to 6.50 including the 5.oo waiting fee. When i paid him i told him if he hadent husstled me out of the waiting fee (since i didnt ask himn to wait ) Id have given him 10 bucks anyway, go figure..

Ok so I unboxed the bike and put it together and took a little ride seems to be OK. tomorrow igot some stuff to box up and mail home then will take a longer shakedown ride. Sunday I will head out.

This portland seems to be an interesting place of course I havent seen toomuch of it yet lots of coffie shops and places to just hang out.
later

George - I so envy your sense of freedom
and adventure. The ability to just pack
up and go. I just finished volume #1 and
here you are starting volume #2. I wish
you a safe trip my friend. And as you
finish your ride around the west-central
part of the Lake - you be sure to stop
by for some refreshment since I missed
you this year in Chicgo and then at
Summerfest.

Hey Cat!

Wish I could say I'd see you sometime on that trip of yours, don't know if it'll happen though - depends on your route! I wish I could see just a little of what you see out there. Keep yourself safe and call if you need anything at all!

I think I am getting my monies worth here in Portland. GOt a lot of things done this am. I slept so sound lastnight, (first time in a real bed in a long time). Went for coffie early and over to the post office and mailed back some stuff. Then went for a long walk, soon it will be all biking. I noticed a baseball stadium in the center of the city so I checked it out and they have a AAA team here and is playing tonight at 7pm I bought a ticket for 7 dollars right near the dugout. To my surprize the ticket also got me free unlimited bus rides today, so i got out and saw other parts of this place.

Met a guy on the train and ran into him again in the hostile he is 68 and has been traveling for 15 years straight. He has studied yoga for the past 30 years.Have had some intgeresting conversations with him and the rest of the people staying at the hostile.

TOmorrow ILL do a long bike ride and check out the route out of town. Ive been told it is about 80 miles to the coast on the route i have chosen. going over a coastal range. Being the first day out with full packs I may or may not make the coast in one day. Doesnt really matter though.

Kelli, you can see, what I see c'mon out for a while and meet up someplace and ride some.Actually If I take the southern route It will put me through Rapid city and Mt rushmore.

Next time I wrigt ILl have some miles in to tell you about
