Ok another week has passsed. its been full of interesting things and places. I ve got about 700 miles in so far. Kelli will post about the ride from bend to mitchel when she receives it and has the time.
The night inMitchel was kinda different it is a town of about 200 people someone was having a birthdayparty the night i was there. so they had sorta kerokie in the street. When I say sorta its because they didnt use a machine they had a guy playin drums and a guy on guitar a nd a lady on a key board. I was drinking the second glass of wine and probeley it was allready 1 1/2 too many.I was talkin to a lady sitting next to me then befor i knbew it she pushed me up and made me take a turn singin the sorta karieokie. I had the tune country roads in my mind all day so thats what i did for my number, Now there are some things that I am good at BUT singing is not one of them, it was all in fun though. Next up was the woman that pushed me up and she did rocky top man could she belt out a tune.
ok next day started with a climb 6 1/2 miles 1 hour and 36 minutes, average speed 3.9mph summet 4,370 ft. The begining wasnt too steep but it got tuff as itwent the decent was fast and fun then it was relitivle flat going through a gorge. I met a couple going west they had sent all their camping gear back a few days ago and decided to just be on vacation now till the coast they goit rid of about 30 lbs of gear wow! onword there was some construction in the gorge 3 areas I had to wait for the flager to send us through, at one point there was s string of old restored cars all headed to a natiuonal show in spokane and they were picking up otheres along the way cool idea.
I took a side trip this day up to sheep rock mountian to check out the view as I was there a pick up pulled in and i had the guy take a pic of me against the mtn. he and his wife are boith retired marines and have been on the road traveling for 8 years we talked for quite some tinme as they have been in some of the same places I have we really had a lot to talk about new zealand, if any of you get the chance to check out the land of kewi you should go.
This evening I was in dayville by my old friend Millie a 77 year old lady that just loves traveling bikers she puts them up in the church overnight and has some interesting stories about the area from long ago.

hey the libary lady gave me another hour yeepie!!!ok
rode from dayville to parie city i WAS GOING TO CAMP AT THE LOCAL RV PARK but didnt like the looks of it the bathrooms were dirty and a group of thugs were hangin arround drinking and it was only 1pm so i went looking for other possibilities. There used to be a hotel on the main street but it was closed so some one suggested i ride up a hill about 2 or 3 miles to see ole sag
I went there and it is a motel set up for long term use for forest crews. The people runnning it were nice and would let me camp use the shower and restroom. for 5 bucks. They asked if id eaten yet and when i said no I was offered a ride back down the hill to go to the local cafe instead of making the trip down and back up the hill. I showered and took the ride Jeff would pick me up again in two hours. This gave me time to eat lookarround and get some grocerys for the next coupla days riding.

next day started with another big ole hill some one told me it would take 2 hrs to the top I made it in 1 1/2 again the down hill ride was fast but cold as I droped about half the distance i went up I must be getting smarter cause i stoped to put my jacked on befor decending. the next hill started and was about the same as the first only not quite as long about half way up i met Dave, going west he is just out of the marines andhaving the time of his life his partner is abouta mile behind him we talked took eachothers picture and departed. his friend cam by and we just waved as we passed. at the bottom of this hill was a grocery/bar. I stoped for a coffie the place dates back to the 1800,s the bar is a antique as is the back bar i saw what looked like a coupla bullet holes and asked about it the old guy working the store told me of some of the history of the place as it was a ruff and tumble place as people were moving west
On i went one more hill to climb i had an ornge i was saving for the top of this last hill but when i got there and ate it it tasted sour but the view from this point was just beautifull so it was OK dowen this hill and arround the curves cruising at 35-40 mph i saw a sing for a steem driven railroad museum so i pulled on to the road to take me there. it was closed but i still could look arround the sign said open on sat and sun only so the only thing i knew for sure is that this wasnt sat or sun. I rode on to find a campsite to bed down. i got into a blm site what a rip off!! 10 dollars no showers no hot water, id have been better just pulling off the road some where and ruffing it. The state and national parks ive been at are 4.bucks for bikers and all had showers oh well I got over it real quick I made myself some dinner, didnt have any fresh meat or chicken but i had an onion, carrot,potatoe, garlic, and noddles so i made chicken stew minus the chicken. soo it got dark and i was ready to go to sleep, Just then the camp host came by to collect my 10 dollars, i thought i was getting away with something i gave them the money and asked what day it was. I t turned out that it was friday, i would get up and go back 7 miles to the steam railroad to see the train running tomorrow.
When i got there i me5t another biker Id met a few days ago Robert is his name his bike looks like a piece of work he doesnt have pannieers he has these big plastic tubs attached to the bike to carrry his things. we talked a while he is one of those people that ois so smart you might think he is dumb.
I got a good look at the train and some pictures of the crew getting ready to take it for a ride full of tourists.I got in the cab and got a pic of the engineer fireman breakman and signal man for my buddy steve who is a rail road engineer for 30 years and probeley hasnt seen anything like this or maybe he has hope the pics turned out ok.
the ride into Baker city looked easy from the map but ther was a very strong head wind but i got here and am gong to take a day off tomorrow and rest up from here its up to the town of half way and accrosss hells canyon the deepest canyou I hear it is HOT at the bottom and a seven mile climb out on the other side. So soon ILL be out of oregon and into idaho it has been quite warm during the day but getting chilly at night the road through idaho is mountians I might have to buy some long handle underware to sleep in and ware at night. ok hope all is well with you

Another day, and still glad to be out here and living. the guy I mentioned in my last post Robert, I met up with him again in this town yesterday afternoon his bike that he was riding was a hundred dollar special and everything was wrong with it, so i ran into him in the local bike shop he was getting outfitted on a brand new bike the machanic was setting it up for him as we talked.
He told me of the trip he took through hells canyon and kinda what to expect he also mentioned he wrote a book about it called "the depest canyon in the world" some day I will do a search for the book.
After pulling out of baker city tomorrow it is a week or so of many climbs and decents as I make my way accross Idaho and into messoula. I got a good look at a calander last night, you know it is easy to loose track of the days here, I see next week is labor day, that means no restrictions between 11 am and 4 pm on going to the sun hy in glacier park. If I go that way that will be good. BUT now Ihave to start thinking about snow! this road usually closes arround the middle of sept due to heavy snow If i go fast i might make it over the divide befor it gets bad. If not ILL have to back track 200 miles and go arround.
the areas i am biking in since 3 days ago is all new havent been here befor I did try to get here last year but the forest fires chased me way north. However the areas i did see befor all look differant because I am traveling east instead of west and get a different take on things.
Probeley wont be able to get to a computer for a while, IlL let Kelli know what is going on and as she gets time can post thanks for stoping by and taking a look at my adventure.

Snow? You can't be riding into a snowy area, are u? I can't tell how far you are riding each day but the hills sound pretty thrilling.

I have told my classes about you and your journey and they are no longer complaining about the Endurance Energy Zone. As one woman, Pat, put it,"If this Catfish guy can ride a steady pace all day for over a month, then I can do it for 40 minutes." When you say that the temperatures are cold at night, are they in the 40's and 50's? What is the total weight of the gear in your pannieers? Have you seen any wild animals along the way? Am I asking too many questions? You have inspired more people than you know. I wish you smooth roads, friendly folks, a great tail wind, and no flat tires. Take care, I will talk to you later.

Hi All! I received a letter from George yesterday, dated August 20th or 21st and mailed August 22nd. So this post is a few days behind his latest posts. I tease George about his penmanship...to date...it hasn't changed for the better...
...so I'll do my best!
"Left Bend Monday am. cruised to Redmond with a tailwind onto Prine Ville where I stopped to get some lunch fixings. While in line to check-out I got talkin to a guy with bad knees walking with a cane. He mentioned he wished he could ride a bike and I told him about the guy I'd met on the coast with no legs at all, riding a customized trike and pedaling with his hands and arms. I could tell this guy was thinking about that as we parted company.
On to the Ochoco Resivoir. Found a place to camp with a good view of the lake. I was expecting cold temps at night, but it stayed comfortable. The tent seems to be better than the other one I had, but is more complicated to set up and the door seems too small and hard to get in. And because I don't bend well with the plates and screws in by back. But is a lot lighter and packs smaller.
Got started by 8am. I met a guy named Pat or Pete, can't remember...But he was headed west. He started his ride in York Town PA, and will end in Florance in about 3-4 days. He's been on the road 80 days, I could feel his excitement to be near his goal. He asked and I gave info to him about Florance. He in turn gave me info on the road ahead of me and particularly the area of a wild fire I am headed to in the next few days. He mentioned some smoky areas but no real threat, this could change though.
This evening I caught a weather report. Big storm hitting the coast, lots of rain. The storm is expected to track East, bring rain to the cascades and maybe to Eastern Oregon. That would help the fire efforts but would also get me wet. Sounds like the guy I met today (Pete or Pat) will be making the climb over McKinzie pass in a storm similar to the one I had a year ago.
I climbed Ochoco pass today. 4,270 Ft. The decent was fast and fun. ended up in Mitchell Pop. 200. Went to the city park to have lunch had 1/2 a sandwich left and an orange. There was 2 retired couples from Georgia there pickniking. They rented a car and were seeing the pacific northwest. They gave me some peaches, cheeze and crackers. I took their picture before we parted.
I'm into some back country area now. Phone doesn't work, can't find a computer. In 3 or 4 days I'll be in Baker City, pop. 9,750. Will resupply and get ready to cross Hells Canyon into Idaho!"
