Mt. Washington Century
 

I've done this ride a few times, sadly it looks like they are considering cancelling this event, permanently.
If it's something you'd like to see continue, search for Tin Mountain Century in NH and ask them to consider keeping it. I'd post a link, but as a new guy, I can't. :)

Living in Jackson and previously in Gorham I've done this ride many times solo over the years. I have a great respect for Tin Mountain Conservation Center and know many of the staff there. That said, I've always wondered about their liability. Designating a bike route carries the implication that it is safe for bikes. The Mt Washington Century includes two dangerous segments for groups even when the group may be spread out. US 2 in Jefferson and five miles of NH 16 on the northern approach to Jackson, with moderate to high traffic and minimal shoulder.

Even riding solo I would take a gravel road alternate bypassing US 2 in Jefferson. Probably not an option for the Tin Mt road bike crowd.

Your post is the first I've heard about possible cancellation. Not sure if this has anything to do with safety. Possibly Covid?

I think it's been a long time coming. Not enough turn out, too much effort. Requires a lot of volunteers plus a couple of police.
I always felt safe doing this ride. There is one downhill, I think after Randal hill. It's pretty fast and there are a lot of cars. That's the only part I felt nervous at.
I hope it doesn't get cancelled.

Always wanted to do it but the restrictions and costs just made trying not worth the effort. They should just allow cyclists to ride it.

Are you thinking of the hill climb? That's different, still sponsored by Tin Mountain. It is expensive. That's only one day a year (plus a practice ride). I did it once, it was great to have a closed road. The hardest ride I ever did.

I was talking about the century. I'm not aware of any restrictions, and it seems to be priced around what others are.

You don't need a sanction from Tin Mt to ride the Century Russ! I was riding the Pinkham/Crawford Notch loop back in the 70s before Tin Mt existed. I ride Bear Notch loop often also. There are plenty of stores to stop at for snacks. No need for official water stops. No need for a commemorative T shirt and water bottle. The route is obvious on any NH state paper map.

Wasn't aware there was a century. Just a road ride to the base and then up the mt.

I've inquired about cancellation with a friend who works at Tin Mt. Their website says "TBD". I've deleted two posts until I hear back.

I live in MA, to me it feels there is almost nowhere safe to ride, except my rollers.
I've done the century maybe 4 or 5 times. I always felt safe.
