Susan G. Komen - Breast Cancer Ride

Nebbie, my bride of 30 years, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in January and received her first treatment of chemo February 2nd. They put in the IV at 9:00 am and removed it at 3:15pm. The medicines were administered very slowly to allow her body to adjust to them.

We have 6 cycles of chemo in 4 week sets. Week 1 she receives four medicines. Weeks 2 and 3 she receives three medicines. Week 4 only two medicines and the cycle starts anew. After this we face surgery, and perhaps more chemo, and certainly radiation. We were told the ultimate prognosis is totally based upon how the cancer responds to this Chemotherapy.

As part of her treatment Nebbie has chosen to be part of a clinical trial because, as she put it, "Maybe something they learn from me will help someone else." Just what you knew she would say!
The most frustrating part of this entire process for me is my feeling of helplessness. I have to watch from ringside as she fights this terrific enemy. I want to be in the ring! I want to be the one blocking the jabs, throwing the punches and not just clinging to the ropes, holding the towels. I need to do more. I am a guy! Guys are supposed to do something.

Well, we found something that will allow me to join the fight and help others at the same time. A team of friends and family will join me to bicycle the 50 mile Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure April 21, 2007, sponsored by the Clarksville Cycling Club.

My efforts will not only encourage Nebbie, but also help support breast cancer research. We need to help find a cure for our mothers, wives, sisters, ourselves. (Yes, guys get breast cancer too.)

I am asking you to join with me as I participate in this local ride in support of the Greater Nashville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Ride for the Cure, whose promise is “to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.”

To make a donation visit: www.komen-nashville.org . Under “EVENTS,” choose “Saturday 4/21 Ride for the Cure - learn more.” Once at the Ride for the Cure home page, select "Sponsor A Participant." Enter Bill and Binkley as my First Name and Last Name respectively and then “Submit.” Next, click on “Bill Binkley” and at my home page follow the instructions.

Should you wish to join us for this event, feel free to register and bring your sneakers or bike and helmet and come on! We’d love to see you there.

Above all else, we covet your prayers as we enter this new chapter in our lives.
