Calais to Jerusalem for Cancer Research UK and Wateraid International
 

Hi everyone,

Thanks for providing a place just for charity events, as it helps get past that first post hesitation!

My name is James, from the UK, and i am one of a three man group who are trying to raise money for the two charities mentioned in the title

We are working under a "near and far" theme to reflect our concern for people everywhere: one charity to help people at home, one to help those a lot farther afield.

Cancer is one of the UKs, the Wests, most common serious illness and effects 1 in 3 people at some time: disease spread by polluted water, indeed no water all, is one of the most serious problems in many countries around the world.

By supporting these charities works, we want to, in however small a way, help people in their greatest needs.

The route of the ride reflects this too - from the lush countries in western europe, which represent where cancer is top concern, to the deserts of syria, jordan and israel, which symbolise the desperate need of water....

Jerusalem is a natural end point for our rider, him being a Christian, and that city being a real oasis in an otherwise arid place.
