I wouldn't underestimate the difficulty of the 100 mile route. Having graduated from Penn State, I understand what you mean about the differences between the climbs in central PA vs. the southeastern area. The climbs are not as long, but they can be steep and the cumulative effect takes its toll - especially in the heat and humidity of August. Think of it as the Tour of Flanders with marginally better pavement.
In previous years, people on here have commented that their Garmin measurements of the elevation seem to be significantly higher than what the organizers measure (approximately 7,000+ vs 4,000+, if I remember correctly).
I have finished the 100 mile route in 2008, and the 70 mile route in 2009. In 2008 I had been in the hospital the Friday and Saturday before the ride, and suffering from intestinal jihad on Saturday night. I also got stung on the chest during the ride, and I am allergic to some types of bee stings; fortunately I did not have an allergic reaction. I finished the ride, but I was severely dehydrated and cramping. It was a freakin' death march, and there were a lot of people walking the hills toward the end.
In 2009, I had hip problems in May that forced me in to physical therapy, and to reevaluate my goal. The 70 mile ride was comfortably challenging for me. I finished, and I had a good workout, but it wasn't the sufferfest of the previous year. Obviously my two rides are not an apples to apples comparison due to differing conditions, but the 100 mile ride seems to be significantly more difficult both in terms of the climbing and extra distance.
Based on the description of your rides, I think you'll be able to do the 100 mile route, but I would advise anyone riding it for the first time to ride comfortably during the first 2/3 of the ride, and let it rip at the end if you're still feeling good.

I'll be flogging through the 45 miler this year (I downgraded to the 20 last year) and tacking on 20 more miles as a wingman at the end of the day bringing tired riders in. I will be very easy to spot being i'll have a blue and pink Lamprey jersey on.

Hey look, I'm back from the dead...
I'm doing the Philadelphia 100 mile course this year. I wonder if I'm being a bit daring. My training rides have been between 25-30 miles all summer and I didn't ride every day.
I'll definitely be planning on eating a bit more at the power stops for some more energy and potassium. Hope to see you out there again this year HigherGround - are you doing the 70 or 100?
I'll be wearing the same kit as last year - LIVESTRONG bibshorts and my green\white Voler semicustom jersey with the falcon and high school seal on the front. Black Specialized helmet. I wonder if I should remove my frame number from last year's Challenge?
Oh and I'm riding a white Specialized Allez.

Hey SgtPepper64 - I'll be there for the 100. I'll be wearing a black and yellow LiveStrong jersey and shorts (well, that should narrow it down!), a white, black, and yellow Bell Ghisallo, and riding a red and white steel Eddy Merckx. I hope to see you there!

Alright I'll keep my eye out. To make things a bit easier look for the good year - 1962. Gee, if they gave me 1967 I could have lived up to my username. lol

What a great time today! I'm tired, sore, and sun / wind burned, but I'm glad that I decided to do it again this year.

I am still soaked from yesterday's ride
Got so wet my contacts were swishing around in my eyes
Brakes were also very wet to desents were an adventure
Good move to close the 100 mile route
Was a bit depressing to see Lance and company heading back so early though

Did they close the 100? I was nearing the 70/100 split and decided I had nothing to prove given I've done it the past 3yrs, so I went off on the 70. I flew through the 70 route pretty fast and actually had more fun doing that than I have in the past doing the 100. I love riding in the rain, but that rain was ridiculous.

I'd love to do it, but traveling to Austin isn't in the budget this year.
Has anyone received information about the Philly Challenge pictures?

Yours truly in the black - I couldn't find many pics of me other than the start. I got tired of sifting through 8 billion photos (my bib # didn't turn up jack).

Good photo grahny! I found a few good ones of me - even if they did inspire me to eat a few more salads!
Good luck to everyone riding in Austin this weekend! I hope you have great weather and a safe ride.

It was great! Cloudy, not too hot at the start, but it warmed up around 11. Our team had some miscommunications, so we missed the (very early!) 90 miles cutoff time, which was a huge let-down, but we made the most of it. It's a pretty hilly ride, but nothing too bad really. There were some nice views and very pretty, rolling, ranchland. I'll post a blog report sometime soon.

Nice write-up. Sounds like the trip from NM was worth it!
I share your frustration with the early cut-off. I'm no slouch, but waiting about 10 mins for a teammate means I didn't make it (my first stop of the ride).

Thanks, so glad I made the trip. We're doing it as a family next year. My wife was a bit jealous, though she will walk with my two daughters and I will ride with my son. Really loved Austin but the traffic was going to drive me insane.
