Columbus Ohio PELETONIA.

Who here is participating in the Peletonia next weekend in columbus ohio to support the james Cancer foundation.
If you have a story tell it. 100 percent of the money raised will be going towards the james cancer foundation.
https://www.pelotonia.org/ride/

I will be only doing the 50 mile peletonia route.
I am riding for my uncle steve who unfortunately was a smoker an died of cancer, he was a dear friend to me who always greeted you as if he hasn't seen you in the longest time. Its been three years since he died and i still miss him.

I don't want this to become a cryfest thread but it would be nice to hear ur stories battling any illness or anyone close to you.

I did the 104mile route last year. You should man up and do at least that. It didn't get fun until the Hocking Hills section. I'm racing a crit in Akron that day this year, I good friend of mine is doing it again this year, though.

Yeah it was a pita raising fifteen hun last year. It's a noble cause though. Sorry to hear about your uncle. Also if it is anything like last year, you have till like the end of Oct. to come up with the cash. So if you feel up for it, the later part of the ride really is that much better. Last you they let you go further if you wanted, and then they just changed your donation. The first 50 is pretty flat and lame.

My fiancee and I were going to do it because of the pressure OSU is putting on its staff to ride it (she works in the med center). Then we found out that the minimum ride was longer than either of us were comfortable with (though we had enough time to train up to it at that point) but what really threw us was how high the minimum fund raising amount was. They're really shooting themselves in the foot with that one (even one of the chief administrators at the James has said that). There's a lot of people who would be willing to work to raise $100, $200, $500, etc, but just don't realistically think they can hack coming up with the stupid minimum they've set.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

The MS150 Pedal to the Point rides do pretty well with a $250 minimum + a registration fee. That being said, having a high minimum may maximize the (funds raised / volunteer effort) ratio. (More riders means more support needed.)

I know I woulda done it if the minimum wasn't so high. There's no way I could raise a grand on my own...

$250 or so, now that's doable

+1.

I raised $500 for TdC by talking to everyone I knew....there's no way that I could raise a grand or more.

My wife and I did the 50-mile yesterday (actually, the route this year is 43 miles). It was our first time in any cycling event, and we were very apprehensive about the fund-raising requirements. But we both surpassed our goal. It's a great event, since 100 percent of every dollar raised goes for research -- this year, more than $8 million. It was also a great day on the bike.

My best friend was hit by a car last weekend while training on his bike for Pelotonia. This was to be his second year. The accident messed up his leg badly, he went to the ER but they sent him home. His leg was black and blue and quite swollen and stiff. He paid to get his bike repaired in time in case he was able to ride. By Friday it was obvious he could not ride.

I suggested he volunteer there instead, and ask for a job where he could sit down some of the time. He liked that idea. So at the Friday kickoff, he went down and found the volunteer dept. and told his story and said he wanted to help out by volunteering.

They said no. The reason why? Their excuse was that they had already printed volunteer shirts and had nothing for him. He said he'd wear his Pelotonia jersey. They said no thanks, they did not want him to volunteer. Sorry, go away.

I volunteered early last year as a photographer. I worked over 16 hours and shot over 4000 images. When I asked where to upload the pictures, they said they already had enough, and no thanks. I did not volunteer this year.

I also disagree with their money raising scheme. You have to promise a certain amount to ride? Why should anyone else donate? All they do doing is lightening the financial load for the rider.

I rode at TDC this year and I'll do it again next year. I'll never have anything to do again with Pelotonia.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever do it again. My friend did the 180 this year again. He enjoyed it, and his employer donated a huge chunk to his goal. I work for a small business so that ain't gonna happen for me. It was a total pita to raise my goal last year. I did however ride my first crit race in Akron Sat. It was cool, except they had to stop the 1-2 race, because a suicide jumper was jumping off of the suicide bridge we were racing under. It made things interesting as cops cut in front of the pack on the 45mph decent, and nearly took out the whole pack. Miraculously no one was hurt. Pekotonia, not so. I guess someone drove around OHP officer directing traffic, and killed some woman on Saturday. Pretty sad.

This was my second year riding - yup, PITA getting the money raised this year - economy sucks !!
I'll prob work a food stop or run a sag next year.

Girlfriend worked a food stop, said behind the scenes was chaos.
They need to take pointers from the people running TOSRV (local back-to-back century). After 49 years, they kind of have it figured out !!!

I'm all for supporting excellent causes, and cancer research certainly is one... HOWEVER, the minimums and shenanigans behind the scenes for Pelotonia just don't fly with me. I know several people who have been hit by cars while training, and even though them getting hit (and the cancer researcher who was killed by a truck during the event) are separate events from the actual ride itself, it just seems... almost cursed? I feel like they just exploded it into this huge, monstrous event without fully supporting the growth. I captained a Tour de Cure team last year and LOVED it. I'll absolutely be doing that next year... and donating some cash to the James for cancer research instead of Pelotonia.

P.S. GREETINGS TO ALL OF MY FELLOW Cbus DWELLERS! Go bucks

The entry fee is $100 -- my understanding is that goes for your jersey, your t-shirt and for food. The rest of the event is underwritten by sponsors, and the money you raise all goes for cancer research. $100 may be steep, but I don't understand how it's a "scheme." I work at home and can't rely on co-workers to donate, so my entry was a complete act of faith. I was really nervous that the money would not come. But it did -- in fact, I surpassed my goal. Pelotonia might not be for everyone, but you'd have to provide more information to convince me something isn't on the up-and-up.

It's a great and worthwhile charity - I just suck at raising money.

I agree with MissKristen, they started out big and got way bigger this year, and have growing pains.

It's hard not to compare it to TOSRV - but thats been going on for 49 years, had nice slow growth over the years, and the organizers have it down to a science - there are people who have worked on the Tour for decades !

Pelotonia, I believe, uses an event services company to "run" the ride, who in turn use volunteers to run the food stops - they just don't have the experience to handle all the problems that come up - so they just close their mind and say "nope, can't do that, go away"

Hopefully, in time, experience will get things running smoother.

I worked TOSRV in the 80's after I rode a few years in the 70's - you can't imagine the problems that can come up !
I have known the director Charlie Pace and Rick H for 35 years - how they haven't gone stark raving mad is beyond me !!

I guess I will be lone positivist. Yes, the event needs more organization. I think that is due to the growing pains. However, the contribution requirement is not really that hard. Company rules do not allow me to solicit internally. I used my personal network and you will be amazed at how quickly and responsive people are for this cause. If Pan-Mass can do it (at a higher minimum) why can't Pelotonia? Don't give up on this.

I'm back on a bike after 18 years out of the saddle. Was recruited by my wife's colleague to ride Pelotonia. It is a steep hill to raise $1,000. Without much effort, I eclipsed $1,500. The event needs work, no doubt, but the 20 miles I did is an experience I'll never forget. I'm back riding again, all because of Pelotonia. I'm hoping to train for 100 next year. If you have questions, I'd be glad to answer.
