Mendocino Monster Century Bicycle Ride - June 12, 2011

Coming up Sunday, June 12, 2011, the Rotary Club of Ukiah will be holding the second annual Mendocino Monster Century Bicycle Ride. This is a ride in Mendocino County, California. There will be two rides this year, which will be spectacularly beautiful, but very challenging routes. This is not a race, but an organized fun ride with rest stops and SAG vehicles to pick up riders who need help. All rides will start and end at Mendocino College, just north of Ukiah, CA. Most riders will be using road bicycles with 12 to 18 speeds, although mountain bikes will work well also.

The shorter ride is the Hairy Monster and starts and ends at Mendocino College. The route heads up over Orr Springs Road and drops down to Montgomery Woods and continues on to Comptche. This ride is a metric century ride that is 100 kilometers (62 miles) in length and has approximately 6900 feet of climbing. This is a tough ride with lots of steep hills and a challenging distance. The Hairy Monster is truly beautiful, heading through beautiful ranch land and stately redwoods. This ride costs $65.00 and includes rest stops, SAG support, a goodie bag a t-shirt and barbecue at the end.

The longer ride is called the Scary Monster and follows the same route as the Hairy Monster as far as Comptche, but then continues west all the way to the coast. This ride is a century ride of approximately 100 miles (we're measuring it as 97 miles) long with approximately 9200 feet of climbing. This ride is very challenging and will push many riders to their limits. You should be a well conditioned and trained athlete to attempt this ride. The Scary Monster is incredibly beautiful, passing through ranch lands, gorgeous redwood groves and traveling all the way to the coast and back. This ride costs $65.00 and includes rest stops, SAG support, a goodie bag a t-shirt and barbecue at the end.

This event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Ukiah and the proceeds will be used for various good works such as eliminating Polio world wide, repairing local park playground equipment, hosting International exchange students and scholarships.

All riders will get unlimited quality food at the rest stops as well as rest room facilities and vehicle support if they need help or get tired. They will also receive a great t-shirt and goodie bag and a barbecue meal at the end of the ride. Extra barbecues for non-riders can be purchased for $15.00. The two major sponsors are the Ukiah Valley Medical Center and Panaracer Tires, but many other sponsors, too numerous to list, have signed up to support this ride.

Registration can be done online at our website, www.mendocinomonster.com, or mailed in with a paper registration available from our website. Registrations will be allowed on the day of the event, but it's preferred that riders preregister.
