2014 Pan Mass Challenge: Cancer Research and Treatment
Hi, from a newbie here.
I rode the Pan Mass this year, and to say it was a challenge is an understatement. Day 1, from Sturbridge to Bourne, MA, was 111 miles of rain. The first 70 were moderate to light, the last 41 a real downpour. Day 2 was somewhat better. I ride for my friends, family, and coworkers who have been taken by the disease, have it now, or have beaten it. All 35 of them. I ride because I can and felt the need to do something other than shake my head ans say "that's a shame."
As some of you know, the PMC is the premier fundraiser for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, an organization to research and treatment. They really do some amazing work. The PMC accounts for 50% of their annual donations which comprise 20% of their annual operating budget. All donations, 100% of the money, goes directly to the Jimmy Fund, which supports Dana Farber. The ride itself is paid for by riders and sponsors.
I rode the longest route, from Sturbridge to Provincetown and have committed to raising $4,300. I have a ways to go and need help. If you can, please click the link below and make a donation.
I know I'm new here, but I'm not going anywhere...

How does it work? Do you solicite folks to donate based on the mileage you do? I ride 3000+ miles a year and have been wanting to try the PMC but don't know how to go about it.

The PMC is pretty straightforward. You pay to sign up and ride, and then commit to raise money at a required level. For example, the ride I did was the longest ride, so the financial commitment is $4,300. If I don't raise that much, they hit my credit card for the balance. There are shorter routes with less of a commitment, as well. For complete info, visit here: www.pmc.org. The ride and the experience is incredible, and it's a good cause, as well. The key, of course, is whether or not you can raise the money!

As a four time cancer survivor - thanks for riding. By the way I'm also a four time (2010-2014) PMC rider. I encourage everybody to do this event if you can possibly find a way to. It's a significant commitment but an amazingly well run event and you won't find a better run charity. Every last cent pledged to a ride goes directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to help end this insidious disease.
