Please help! CCM Elan - good bike to buy????
hello!
Looking at buying a vintage CCM Elan. I just want a nice easy bike to ride around town. Also, I am partial to the vintage cruiser aesthetic. There are some hills to contend with so it has me thinking if I should get a new hybrid style or not. Plus, there may be times where I will have to ride on gravel instead of streets/sidewalks.
Anywhoo, came across this bike. I took it for a spin and it seemed just fine (it has been purchased from the auction in the link and since tuned up). And apparently it has a sturmey archer hub.

Is this a decent bike? Or, is it truly a junker?
Thanks for your help!!

It is a run of the mill ladies cruiser from the 1970s that is worth about $50 but since you are in Toronto, a big market, it will sell for about $150.

It helps if you tell us your height. No bike is worth buying if it doesn't fit the rider. Am I to understand that someone other than you bought it and tuned it up and now you want to buy it from them?
Did they address the vast amounts of rust? How much are they asking for it?

I would say only $100-120 fully serviced and ready to ride with good tires. As shown only about $50. Also this bike is a bit of tank heavy all steel 40lb+ 3 speed geared for flat land, not a good bike hilly country.
For the OP purposes I would suggest considering a hard framed MTB you typical get the best deals on these used bike wise. You can bike up real nice ones from the 90's for $150 or so, plenty of gears and good brakes for dealing with hills. With a good set of street tires and fenders they make great year around commuter recreational bikes.

I am 5'4".
The kijiji ad where it's posted is no longer up but it's still for sale. I don't think the one in the police auction link is the exact same as the one I found as there is very little rust + it has original reflectors. The police auction is the only one I could find online that looked fairly comparable. The guy I would buy from is selling it for $70

That's good to know about this bike and hills! It's a tough decision for me as I am a VERY "occasional" bike rider (like maybe 10x per year or less) so I don't want to spend a ton of money. Plus I really like the look of the Elan. But on the other hand, I don't want to buy a junky bike that's not worth taking on as it may be prone to issues. I did take the Kijji one for a spin and it was easy to ride and just "simple". I really don't know how to judge a good from a bad bike though
