70's Mercier 300 frankenbike
Hi all,
I picked up this well used Mercier 300 as a frame and built it with parts I had in the archives. rides very nice, but just too big. I had upright bars on it for a while and it was fun, but this seems to need drops. Reynolds 531 throughout. smooth and springy ride. I am asking $300 on Grand Rapids CL and it is cricket city. Am I out of line asking this much for a pretty ugly bike? Pictures attached
I actually like the patina.
Thanks for the help,
Tom

I think this is too high. If you like old bikes, the parts aren't right. If you want a rider, you can do better with other vintage bikes and not have to deal with French parts. A more realistic price is $200ish and you'll have to write a pretty good CL ad to let people know what they're getting. It's not as if Mercier and Reynolds 531 are household names. Plus the paint job is not in great shape.

Hmmm...not a well known brand (such as Bianchi, etc), VERY rough paint and a frankenbike on its components? I think that 200 is probably high...in my the ATL market where I am...where there are not a lot of decent bikes...I think you would be lucky to get 150...and it might sit for a while...
Uninformed consumers will not want it due to paint issues.
Flippers would not want it due to Frankenbike, paint and price
No collectible value...
Could be a very tough sell...

I would think around $200 is likely the most the bike would sell for. I have found you can't really get much if any premium for 531 frameset with rough paint and lesser none matching components.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. I also received a "no offense, but" email though CL. If I don't sell it, no big deal I will put the upright bars back on it and enjoy it.

It might be more profitable to sell the frame on ebay where someone actively looking for a 70's Mercier could find it and use the parts on something else.
