I selling this and was wondering what is might be worth. Has a new chain and rear deraileur. Chain ring and pedals arms changed to current type from pin held style. Straight wheels and good tires. Here,so some pics.

Is New York in a depression? A while back On CNBC they were telling viewers the traders were paying $75 for a hamburger for lunch.

I think if you rode it you would realize it is worth a lot more then $50. People are getting $50 for wrecks like this. If that's all it's worth I may as well just keep riding it.

By appearance, this bike could sell (during riding season) for $175 in DC pretty easily. If those tires are older or original, then that'd be a difficult selling point. I might invest ~$20 in a pair of Forte Strada plain black tires just to claim "new". Anyway - in NYC, I'd expect that you could get close to DC prices.

It really looks pretty appealing with the chrome half fenders and the gumwalls. I might remove the turkey levers, cut the pins, and also throw on $10 set of Cane Creek brown hoods. Then, ask $200 and probably get it. PG

I agree with the department store bike assessment. It has a cool vintage look but quality wise it is the equivalent of a Kent road bike at Walmart for $150 brand new. You might catch someone unaware who will give more but the actual value is probably $75-$100.

As others have mentioned, the Vulcan was a department store entry level bicycle, worth considerably less than the higher end more collectible bicycles of its day. However...



The bike appears to be in excellent and little used condition. If the seller has good marketing skills and patience, then $150.00 to $200.00 is not unrealistic, assuming the bike is road worthy and safe to ride. I doubt the bike would bring much more than that, though.

If the owner is in a hurry to sell the bike, expect fifty to a hundred dollars, if lucky.

As I understand it... bicycle thief in some areas could make this a perfect bicycle to ride. No great perceived value that would attract a bicycle thieve. Yet a good looking, and good riding, reliable, fun, piece of transportation. Of course.... I'd still lock it down!

Well, a Big Mac meal will run about $8.50, but that's not where traders eat. If you've never lived in New York, the upper incomes are unbounded relative to the median US income. If you have a financial industry income, your lunch budget is not the problem, it's having time to eat.

So, yeah, there are $75 burgers in this town. The people who would ride this bike don't buy them.

As for a depression, The Bronx is the poorest county in the state of New York. Queens and Brooklyn also have low income neighborhoods.

That's the serious answer to your question.

If the bike is set up to fit the OP's needs, then, in my opinion, the bike is too small for him/her to ride. Look at the height of the seat post and steering stem. Both are sitting too high. That situation can, and often does, result in damage to the frame, seat post and/or stem. Not only that, but if the stem snaps off or comes out of the steering tube, expect a sudden and unpleasant crash, probably resulting in damage to both the bike and the rider.

Being the offseason, that bike wouldnt sell at all here in my area. In the summer, 50-65.00 or so.

Basically a vintage BSO with gaspipe frame, stamped and crimped dropouts, low-end components and nutted axles. Nice unusual garage-kept condition. IMHO, a $50-$75 bike back then and a $50-$75 bike now. Maybe more if the buyer doesn't recognize that.

Having taken it apart and greased all the bearing etc., new chain, updated the chain rings and derailleur, and riding it, I will tell you from experience that this bike is of better quality then the $500 bikes people are buying in their local bike shop today. I decided to list it at $250 and go from there.
