Velocity Aerohead custom Wheelset: What is it worth?
Hi there,
Sorry if this doesn't belong here, not quite vintage but...
I've got a custom built wheelset that I'm thinking of selling, and I would like to know what this would be worth. Bought the bike second hand, so don't know how much they cost new. I've read here and there that similar wheels would have cost upwards of $600 new.
Front:
Velocity Aerohead rim (red)
White industries H2 hub
24 Sapim Aerodynamic spokes
Rear:
Velocity Aerohead OC rim (red)
White industries H2 hub, 10 speed Shimano/Sram
28 Sapim Aerodynamic spokes
weight for both: +/- 1500g
Wheels are in great condition. What would be a fair price for these if I put them on Ebay?
Thanks a lot!

A lot would depend on the actual condition of the wheels, brake tracks, and hubs.
White Industry hubs are supposed to be very nice.
Around here on Craigslist, I see wheelsets offered for under $100 sell. Those for over $200 move very slowly, and really require something quite spectacular to get interest (carbon fiber rims, etc).
I can't say where yours will hit, but if you offered the set for $300, I don't think it would move unless it was absolutely new.

The value of those wheels is very much in the hubs and you'll need to be patient to find just the right buyer. I recently sold a pair of wheels with Velocity A23 rims and polished silver Paul high flange single speed hubs. I asked $250 on craigslist and ended up selling them for $200. I only got a few responses, but most of them were for people who were pretty serious buyers. On eBay you'd have to consider shipping cost -- either passing it on to the buyer, which lowers what they'd be willing to pay, or factoring it into your asking price.
The fact that the hubs are 10-speed really lowers the value quite a bit. Everyone buying high end parts wants 11-speed these days. I think those can be upgraded to an 11-speed freehub, but that's additional cost to the buyer.
I think $200 is about the most you can expect to get for them, but I'd start higher -- maybe $300 OBO -- and see how it goes. Figure out how you're going to ship them before listing because the cost might surprise you.

Good points all. I think a reasonable expectation is $200-ish.
Just shipped two sets of wheels via Bike Flights, both sets in actual bike wheel boxes. One went as far as you can go from DC and still be in the continental USA, that was $42. The other was about 1000, miles away but still east coast, for $17.

Thanks guys, this is very helpful info!
Maybe I will just hold on to them then, since my bike is 10 speed, and they are really nice wheels. Don't want to sell them too far below their value just because they are 10spd and not brand new.

The "value" is what a buyer and seller can agree upon.
However, it is probably one of those things where it would cost far more to build them up than you could sell them for. You may, in fact, be better off tearing them down and selling the individual parts. Hubset, spokes&nipples, rims.

Maybe. But generally speaking, I've found that wheelsets just don't hold their value. Keep the ones you like that work on the bikes you have, and sell off the ones you don't use.
Trust me, they won't be worth more as they get older.

That is a good wheel set. I would agree about $300. Check out what those hubs sell for on eBay, then add about $50 for the remainder.

IF I were wanting new wheels even for a 10 speed bike at this point, I'd still want to be able to put an 11 on there if I'm spending more than a few hundred bucks for them.

You can get new aerohead hoops for $100 for both. WI T11 hubs (11 spd capable) brand new for $469. Spokes and build would probably price a new version of this set around $750.
I think a used 10spd set of wheels with older White Industries hubs is worth $225-$250. As others have mentioned, the values is in the hubs. The challenge is finding the buyer who appreciates these hubs AND doesn't need the latest model.
