1983 Peugeot PFN10/LE

I have a 1983 Peugeot PFN10/LE (double butted Vitus181 tubing). 60cm frame. Paint work is a bit matte, decals also worn. . it has the original ATAX Guidon Philippe handlebar and original seatpost. Groupset is early Shimano 105 (frame shift). Not sure about rarity or value. Any comment would be appreciated.

Well, the crankset definitely isn't early 105. It looks more like 5th generation, 5600 series. The derailleurs might be 2nd generation New 105, but it's hard to tell from the dark picture, which also makes it difficult to assess the overall condition.

The basic bike seems ok but it's a bit of an anomaly. The French equipment like the Stronglight 104 crankset and Maillard wheels is missing and replaced with newer non-STI Shimano so the Francophiles are alienated and so are the modernists. As well, are you looking to flip the bike, keep it as purchased or do a period restoration? Knowing what your intent is will make comments more effective in discussing "rarity and value".

Thank you bertinjim - this is the kind of response I was hoping for. I got the bike from a friend who wanted to get rid of it. It was handed down to him from his dad who bought it new. My friend added the Shimano group set. It was covered in yellow paint when I got it, which i removed. I intend keeping the bike and will probably do a period restoration over time (as I did on an "84 Pinarello Super Record). Just would like to get some idea as to how rare/collectible these frames are these days.

First, cut OJ2 a little slack. He does a good deal of the valuating around here and isn't going to put his number on something without more to work with. Hopefully you can appreciate that. Granted, his bedside manner is a bit short but you'll learn to appreciate that too!

As for your bike, I'm no Peugeot expert but I kind of watch the Vitus tubing bikes from afar. What I found cool about yours is there is nothing in the US catalogs with your exact bike. There are PFN10s but your sticker scheme is quite a bit different so I suspect it was a European spec. Your color scheme looks like the lowest of the low ends sold here (ala P6) but that's actually kind of cool in its own way as well.

My summation is it's a nice bike that will make an excellent rider once it's gone through and tuned up. Value-wise once she's all pretty, probably right there with mid-80s Japanese lightweights, $250-$300. Just my swag. I don't see it occupying the same air as Colnagos and Pinarellos from the same era.

If the bike is a keeper then you will find it a very nice rider. I had a PF 40 randonneuse built with Vitus 181 and the same geometry as your PFN 10 and liked it very much especially in its white and orange North American livery. (The bike was made in Quebec.) The fellow I sold it to used it in Paris-Brest-Paris proving the bike was much more competent than the first owner. Its original equipment was Mafac Competition brakes, Simplex LJ front and rear, a Simplex post, Stronglight 104 and LF, QR Atom hubs with Mavic clincher rims and Michelin Bib tires. The freewheel was a 6 speed Atom. Pedals were Atom 700s. If you need a photo for reference, let me know and I will dig one out and scan it for you.

The pictured bike graphics does not resemble the 1983 PFN10 in the USA brochure.

https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Broch...re%20PFN10.jpg

However, it is in the France brochure edition, as a PFN10L.

Given it's a Frankenbike, as presented, my estimate of FMV is about $150-$175. A clean, original PFN10, with VG paint might be worth double.

Thank you oddjob2. I really appreciate this. Reason why I asked about value is twofold. One - if it would have been a $500+ bike I would feel obliged to go back to my friend about it. Secondly - it gives me a guidance on the kind of money I want to spend on de-frankensteining it. On my Pinarello rebuild I went slightly crazy

Thank you Bertijim. I will start with the brake levers and get some Mafacs to make it conform to Eroica rules, then swap the components bit by bit. I have a German catalogue that will help with the components, but your comments are very helpful. I took my previous Pinarello rebuild to factory spec, I want to leave a bit of wear and previous ownership in this. There is something about riding an old bike - so much more engaging.

Thank you Plonz.Point taken. Thank you for your observations. Like I wrote to OJ2, I intend keeping it, but want some idea of value/ rarity.
