Raleigh Competition GS
Really don't NEED another bike but have been idly looking for my first road bike and saw this Raleigh Competition GS.
The owner told me it has a new front wheel "with cartridge bearings." I don't know what that means.
I don't love that there is rust on it. I have a different restoration project that I'm working on and I think by the time I'm done I will feel okay about buying a vintage yard sale or garage sale bike and fixing it myself. So I'm not sure if paying 200 for a not-even-great condition bike is a good idea. Although this was a really nice one when new, and maybe still is.
What do you all think of it and the price of $180-200, which is what I would probably offer.
Thanks!

$200 - $250 seems fair, depending on where you live (market location plays a big part in vintage bicycle value). If you do go for it, ask why the new wheel and, if possible, ask to have the original wheel included (might be fitted with the Campy hub that matches the rear).
Hope that is a help and, for what it is worth, the Raleigh GS is a pretty nice bicycle, in my opinion.

The price of $200 seems about right considering the mismatched wheels and condition issues. It's a really nice bike but with the paint chrome issues and basically needing a wheel set I couldn't see going more than $200.

incazzare.
That looks like a 78-80 model. I had a 79 and it was probably the nicest riding bike I ever had. I'd definitely pick up another one in my size for $200. Personally I think the frameset alone is worth at least $150.

Bikes: No-name LH drive track. Also ride an Exxon Graftek, a Masi, a Trek R200 or a RR Boneshaker for fun!

The front changer is no older than 1978, as it is the pre-CPSC model. The 3-pin crank is seemingly of similar vintage.
The rear changer looks to me like Athena, a newer replacement.

Well, he doesn't have the original front wheel anymore because it was stolen at some point.
Tough decision! Really nice bike, maybe for someone who knows more than I do. I think I'm going to pass because of the issues with the wheel and the rust. And something doesn't feel 100% right about it, not sure why.
I'm actually surprised he hasn't sold it already. But maybe the market is tough in the DC area, judging from all the repeat CL posts I see.

I have a 1977(first year of the GS) and I love it. I got it last year from the original owner in very good condition in Central California for $350 and I feel it was fair. The bike was 100% original though and in black. It rides very well and I ride it regularly 40-50 mile rides with no issues . They came with a Brooks Pro saddle which on my bike was not even broken in yet! I don't think it was ridden much at all. It is a 59cm frame or 23.5". A very comfy ride to say the least. I think under 200 would be a good deal. Joe
