Talk me into/out of this bike > 1985 Team Fuji in Pink

For the record, I already have a 1984 Team Fuji as a wall hanger.

But I've recently been more interested in finding a "rider" quality Team model.

Enter the usually wacky world of Hawaii CL.

Owner is asking $250, which seems high considering the bike will need consumables and I haven't had a chance to see what else.

FLAMINGO FTW

Image from Fuji catalog:

From what I understand, the frame is fully chromed underneath the pink. So if I really can't stand the color after some time, I can go chrome in an evening.

The internet doesn't have many references to this colorway, but the quad-butted/VAlite frame is well-liked.

And the Suntour Superbe bits are a plus.

Expecting to remove the aero bars, replace brake hoods, tires, cables, chain, etc.

So what's FMV for this thing as-is?

I love that color, and it seems perfect for Hawaii (my birthplace!). Should clean up well. No idea about FMV, but it looks like it's missing the frontmost rear brake-cable guide, which should be a good excuse to get the price down further.

I would buy it near asking price just for the groupset and framset if it were in my size. But that is my personal opinion. Looks like it will need consumables, possible touch up paint, and a full tune.

How much is it worth to you?

I'd ask $175 and see where it goes from there. In my market, something like this wouldn't last too long.

Heck, I'd pay $200 for it if it fits... more if paint is superclean. But I tend to go more with "what's it worth to me?" rather than "what's it objectively worth in the world at large?"

Cool bike.

It's worth $250 unless the top tube guide is buggered.

Looks like bubbling rust problems under the paint on the fork, and maybe the top tube--certainly it is missing a cable guide. I dunno. I'd love a nice pink bike but assuming the rust problems aren't serious, they still need looking after. Plus the consumables. And really, it should be fully overhauled. I might buy it at half the asking price.

That's an old computer transmitter on the front. Sadly there is no market for them. Nice bike though.

Are those rims rusted or is it just that the anodizing has worn off the brake tracks?

Dweenk is spot on - that's an old Avocet transmitter on the front wheel.

I love the mid 80s team fujis, but the prices are all over. Somebody recently posted one they sold on ebay for 500+, an outlier imo. 200-300 is fmv in most locales and Hawaii is expensive. The frames are nicely made for mass produced and have a lively feel but stable riders. Agree about the color on those rims assume maybe light reflection? The wheelset should be alloy 700c.

I would say it's worth about the asking price in Honolulu which is a pricy market, if there's no major issues with the frame, looks to have some rust and missing braze on's and the Superbe stuff works good .

Thanks for the commentary...I'm leaning towards a yes on this one, pending a good look-over.

Rad! If you ever make it out this way, reach out.

I do see the top tube guide that's busted off.

The rims are intentionally gold, per the seller:

Will report back after I take a look at it in person!

I was an Army brat, and we were transferred out before my first birthday, so have no childhood memories, except from the many photos and 8 mm movies my father took. But I did get back to take my mother on a vacation at the Royal Hawaiian years ago(it was everything she had hoped it would be; a real time capsule of Honolulu), and then went back 6 years ago to get married on the beach. That was perfect. We definitely want to get back and do more island exploring.

As for the bike, I'm hoping you find that it's more grungy than rusty. Good luck with the buy.

I ended up bringing her home.

The paint and decals aren't in awesome shape, but I wanted a rider and that's what I got.

According to the owner, this bike has been all over the island. Literally been taken on a trip around Oahu.

The rims are gold UKAI, which I haven't seen before.

Brakes are Shimano 600, not terrible.

The rear mech is in good shape, save for much of the lettering being rubbed away.

But she's no lightweight as-is, coming in at 25.5lbs.

I hope to bring her down to 22-23lbs after she's settled.

Thanks again for the comments, and I'll share back to the appropriate thread once she's cleaned up

That's a cool frame, I'd have pulled the trigger too. Lot of directions you could go, depending on what you like - you could stick w/the components it has and/or go mostly-period-correct, or (if it were me) convert to modern 9-10-11 speed with new wheels and STIs, and you'd probably get it under 20lbs no problem.

Good deal as for weight if you loose the cheesy bar extenders, get some nice modern tires and tubes, proper alloy pedals and a nice seat you will be down to 21-22 lbs. I have had a couple of similar Fuji's they list 23lbs-24lbs curb weight stock and can easily get under 22lbs with no extras and light tires. I have seen weight weenie racers setup under 20lbs.

I agree with OP ending up in the 21-23 lb range. From my experience, you'd have to do lightweight upgrades to the wheels to get it any lighter.

Nice! The rust issues look minor, and hopefully that chrome fork crown will clean up will with some damp aluminum foil. Glad to see the cable guild looks like it just broke off, vs. having rusted off. Maybe a poor brazing job?

Surprised a bit by the weight, but as you say, it shouldn't be too hard to get under 23# without spending too much.

A little extra weight should be welcome on those dramatic down hill runs over there. If I'm getting close to 40mph I want something substantial beneath me. Be good. Have fun.
