"Vintage" Koga Miyata

first post here so excuse any initial lack of information I provide

Looking to buy my first road bike found a promising one here that the owner is offering for $250 says there's a problem with left crank arm, but shouldn't be a urgent fix. Just want to know if it's worth the price

It would be nice if you could find the model name, or some pictures of the tubing decals. That being said, it looks like a pretty nice, higher end frame. Probably an '82 or '83 by the top mounted shifters. Likely double butted cr-mo frame, and high manganese fork (Miyata only seemed to spring for cr-mo forks on their pro level bikes.). Other than the left crank, everything else seems to be in pretty good shape. Your main concern should be how it fits -- ie how tall are you, and how long are your legs? It looks like its about a 60cm frame, so it would fit best if you were about 6' (Maybe 5'11" to 6'3" or so, depending on your proportions and fit preferences.)

I wouldn't worry too much about the crank arm -- it's shot, along with the pedal. Looks like someone welded the end of the pedal (WTF???) Finding an exact match might take some time or $$$ on ebay, but finding a similar-ish one (same length) and a new pair of pedals shouldn't set you back more than about $50.

As for price, it seems fair. A lot will depend on the local market. That would be a good deal in some of the hotter metro areas, or it might sit for ages in other areas. Given the crank arm problem, it's no screaming deal, but seems reasonable, especially if it fits. (Miytas were finished very well, and this was from a time when they had really gotten their act together. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer production bike.)

Hi,
Do a Bikeforum search for the bike, there is a lot of information that should help you decide...in my book 250 for a bike that will need a new crank (single arm driveside may be hard to find), as well as a complete service, 27 inch wheels seems high to me....but I do not know the exact model etc.
There are other marques in that price range that might be just as good or better....do not be in a big hurry to buy, there are a lot of bikes out there and the first one at 250 should be a good one.

+1

Shimano Golden Arrow components, meh.
It's a project bike, would be a spendy fix at the LBS, at least $100 with parts, crankset and pedals, plus overhaul.
You can find equivalent Miyata 310s in ready to ride condition for less than $250.

As presented, bike is worth $100, including shipping.
