1990's Shimano 600 (with index shifting) group
I'm trying to evaluate where this mid to late 90's groupset rates vs Campagnolo Victory or Athena of the same era, or other groupsets of that era?
I have a bike with this full groupset, I know its below the DuraAce groupset, but, how was it rated overall, and how was it compared to the other groupsets made during that era and is it considered special today?

It was always a very good group, and one pro team even used it rather than Dura Ace. It held up well and functioned just as well as DA - it just wasn't as light.

I equate it to being the Ford F150 crewcab of cycling groups of that era. A workhorse that can be used to transport things to a job, room enough to take to the mountains and cleans up well enough that the valets dont snicker behind your back when its date night with mama
Technically its not nicer than Campagnolo Athena -- (my opinion, and thats based on appearance) but it used to be utilized on bikes from $1500 factory built Giants and Treks, all the way up to custom bikes
I recall seeing both a Simonetti and a Colnago bi-titan roll out of the same shop wearing 600 tri color
Functionally, its good enough that someone trusted its use on his $4000 Bi-Titan (in 1994 dollars) , As well, its a good enough group that ive collected several 600 groupsets for use on future projects

It's a great group. I prefer it to the seven speed Dura Ace group I have. 600 provides the same level of performance as the Dura Ace. Usually, I can find NOS or near new condition 600 gear for less money than badly abused Dura Ace parts.
Both Shimano 7 and 8 speed components are functionally better than Campagnolo.

If condition is equal, Campy always brings more. I tend to hoard 600 tricolor and Dura Ace 7400 parts and eventually put them on personal builds. Campy bits go in the to be sold pile to help fund the insanity.
Mid 1990s shouldhave STI levers. I find the Campy Ergos shift better, particularly like the FD trim.
