De Rosa King and Cannondale R4000
Hello, my friend received this De Rosa King as a gift and was told it was $14,000 new and currently worth $8,000 which seems excessively high to me. I'm hoping to get some responses as to what this bike is truly worth. I don't know much about it other than that the frame is a 2004 but I did try my best to feature all of the components in the pictures.
The second bike is question is my 1999 Cannondale R4000 with upgrades. I have probably invested much more into this bike than I should have... It is specked with multiple campagnolo components, a Bontrager RXL wheelset, and a brand new drivetrain.

The King was the top of the line frame for De Rosa at the time (might still be for all I know). It’s a very nice frame with a nice group but at best I think it would sell for $2500 to $3000 now. 10+ year old carbon frames just don’t hold much value.

I know nothing about that De Rosa but I don’t see how it is worth 8k. You might get that for one in pristine condition but this one was ridden hard and put up wet too often.

Thanks for the responses. Thats what I was thinking, $2,500 is about what its worth I just wanted to confirm as he seemed quite adamant it was worth much more. Maybe it was 8k new but this still sounds a little high to me. from what I have been able to find the 2005 king frameset was about $4,000 new so fully built id say total cost new was between $5,000-$7,000 does this sound about right? As for the brake arms on my cannondale they, and even the pads, are campagnolo like most of the other components. Im not sure if this is stock or upgraded. I am the second owner of the bike and they were installed when I bought it. The bontrager wheelset, look keo classic pedals, and shimano 105 derailleur are not original. With this in mind, what would be the total value of the cannondale? I don't plan to sell it anytime soon but am genuinely curious.

What do you notice about the dropout? There's a nearly idential one on ebay listed for $1,500, it has not sold yet. My friend still seems to believe it is worth $8,000...

The competition for an $8,000 bicycle purchase is unbelievably fierce; anyone with an $8K purchasing budget is going to have many, many choices from top manufacturers- including Colnago. Heck, that's true for someone with a $2500 bike budget. In almost every case, those bikes will be NEW and SHINY- not rusted, sweat-encrusted or questionable in any way. They will undoubtedly utilize current technology such as 11 speed electronic shifting, which this King does not. So, there's that.
Not to mention that anyone who knows carbon frame construction would have questions regarding the condition of that rear dropout.

Hah!!!
A few points:
My mechanic looked at the pic and thought someone attempted to straighten a bent drop out. While the drop may be alloy, it is set in CF. I would have sent it to a CF repair guy like Calfee to figure it out. I wouldn't trust it without a pro giving it a clean bill of health.
The bike on ebay is quite nice, if you are into that sort of bike. It looks fairly fresh and has a great groupset. I think it's priced to sell, yet hasn't. That should be a hint about your value.

As Gomango explained above, the dropout is alloy. The frame is carbon fiber. The two need to be joined together well and quite firmly. This is not an easy task.
In the picture of the dropout above, the dropout itself looks really beat up, and the carbon fiber around it looks chewed and peeling.
In my world, "chewed and peeling" are not terms that would be included in the description of a desireable carbon fiber framed bike, let alone an expensive one.

Oh I see it now. It does look rough but I looked at it in person today and doubt its anything beyond cosmetic. I appreciate all the responses.

That is way beyond cosmetic. As @gomango stated in his post... I would have that looked at on a professional level before even thinking of riding it.

Have them check that front fork while you're at it.
There looks to be a scratch or crack on the right leg near the back.
I'd have a CF pro look over the whole shebang before I would ride it.
