Is this worth anything close to the ask? It's in great condition, very light, and looks well built. Lugs are nice. Paint is almost perfect, done by Cyclart, although seller claims it's not a repaint. I find it hard to believe that. Bike looks unused.

I went to check the bike out because it looked nice and it's only a mile away. The concerns about buying a bike by less renowned builders are obviously the resale value when that time comes and reliability and structural integrity of the frame. Not enough reputation out there.

That being said, I agree with the others here who say that it's a lot of money for what it is.

Hey guys, just wanted to let everyone know that I bought this bike yesterday....I may have passed camelopardalis on the way out as I was walking in! I grew up in Goleta and used to see Chris Pauley bikes in the shops up there and always wanted one. The lugs were always so cool...and they were LIGHT. I talked the price down a bit and got him to throw in some new tires. It also came with 2 sets of wheels, both with Record Hubs and Super Record cassettes. If you look at the 1983 catalog for these bikes, Cyclart was doing the painting for Pauley. Sometimes Greg Diamond did the painting on Chris Pauley bikes as well...he was another local builder up in the SB area along with Chris King. The Silca frame pump painted to match with metal campagnolo valve is a bonus. This bike rides like a dream....very smooth and solid....and the components are almost unused full Super Record. Cinelli stem and bars with Almarc leather wraps and a Corsa saddle make this a top of the line bike in every way. After parting out the extras, it will cost me about $850, which for me is a good price for a great bike and piece of SoCal biking history. cheers!

It certainly does look like a pristine rig, and from the few pics provided has some lovely details. @dtranquil, you should get your post count up above 10 so you can share lots of details here! I for one would love to see more pics. Have you any history on your particular frame?

Rear dropouts look cool - Henry James? Also, I note an alloy Campy freewheel in the pics - is that what you mean by Super Record cassette? If so, and they have little use, they are nice scores (though they won't hold up to lots of hard miles and should be replaced with more durable steel units if you make this a daily rider); even lightly used go for big bucks on Ebay.

For those of us that missed this on the first go-around, what was the initial asking price? $850 for it after passing along the extras would be a fantastic price, regardless of the builder's reputation. From here the workmanship looks fantastic!

I would love to post some pics....it truly is a custom piece of work. I am going to have to put some new tires on it before i can really put any miles on it. Guess I will have to wait until I have more posts to upload some pics? strange rule...

Thanks for all the info and links for Chris Pauley...I learned a lot, but I still want more! I dropped a line to the Cyclart guys to ask if they have any records on the bike or info about Chris....will post if I hear back.

@Drillium Dude what cassette would you recommend for this bike instead of the Campy Alloy? It has a 13-28 Campy alloy on it now....which seems like a good wide-range for a 6 speed and what you might want for Eroica / training. But if it's going to break, then I'll swap it out...

The rear drop outs are Shimano actually....the lugs are Henry James I think....according to the catalog I saw, they were what he used on all the Tierra bikes he built.

Just to be clear: you can use the Campy alloy freewheel - it's not necessarily going to break, but it will wear much quicker than a typical steel body/cog unit. As long as it is threaded for your hub (Italian, British or French), any freewheel (not cassette - freewheels are completely self-contained, thread-on units), depending on the frame spacing, will work. I'm assuming you would be looking for a 6-speed; Suntour, Shimano or Regina would all do the trick. Try to find new or near-new so that the wear matches your chain and chainrings. It appears both are barely used on your bike.

One important bit regarding the removal of your Campy alloy freewheel: it must be removed using a special tool. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that it can be removed with any old two-prong remover - that's a shortcut to destroyed removal notches and will put the value right into the trashcan. Check your LBS - or better yet, see if there is a Forum member near you that has the correct removal tool. You never know. Bottom line is that these alloy freewheels are worth lots of money in good shape and they're just not something any of us really need for day-to-day use. Even in their day they were rarely used but for TTs.

thank you everyone for the great info. The Regina CX and Suntour Winners with the right cogs were not so easy to track down in good shape....so I went with a barely used Shimano 600 6-speed freewheel which has the same range of gears as the one that broke (13-28T). It seems to work fine with the Regina chain on the bike and the SR derailer shifts it into all 6 cogs without any issues...in fact it shifts better than with the Campy alloy freewheel. I am toying with the idea of finding a HG90 or HG91 chain because I believe the overall outer width is more narrow than the Regina and hence less rubbing...is this a valid idea?

Also, I tracked down and left a VM for Jim Cunningham....Cyclart founder and former Masi CA painter....he called back and left a wonderful message about Chris Pauley and his work. He painted a lot of the Pauley bikes, especially the later Tierra models....and also helped design the cool "reads both ways" Pauley logo. He is now working with:

The Campagnolo freewheels are very nice but with aluminum cogs, they will wear rapidly compared to a typical steel unit. Don't attempt to remove without the proper tool, Campagnolo of course made one and so did Bicycle Research as I recall. I have one but don't know where you are. A wider range unit on good condition... Could fetch a handsome sum at auction, most were narrow ratio, think time trial equipment.

This got my attention and caused me to "re-open the casebook" on my not-as-yet-ID'd custom frame that the seller said was "probably" made in the Santa Barbara area.
I wrote off any Chris Pauley connection back when I had considered him but now seeing a couple examples with (maybe) the same tomato-red paint and similar "bikini" style fastback seat cluster, I'm reconsidering.
Nobody has yet shown the same weird pinch-bolt treatment that unfortunately I did not keep a picture of before I had to cut and re-tap it. But seeing the variety of his work and in that area, I'm thinking this could well be one of his styling flights of fancy that did not pan out so got dropped.
So for more grins and skittles: here are some crappy low-res shots of the "mystery" red frame with the only marks being the very faint Columbus dove stamp on the center of the headtube (ala headbadge) and of course the Cinelli BB shell.
What do you think: perhaps another "lost" example of Pauley's work? I'd be chuffed and stoked to be able to put his name to it!
