what is it worth? should i help her sell it? should i be the one to buy it?

A neighbor of mine wants to get rid of this; used to be her dad's. i took one look at that matte black paint and dark tan tires and told her to hang it on a wall! it's fantastic to look at. other than a dent in the pump, there are no obvious flaws.

i only had a few seconds with the bike, and didn't see a serial number under the bottom bracket. (I don't know anything about bikes made before the 90s)

You can likely tell the year it was made by looking at the number stamped on the rear hub.

If you would use it, you should buy it. I doubt if the paint is matte black, probably dirt or dust is giving that appearance. If you ski cross country or play croquet, you should ask about those items as well.

That is a pretty nice looking Raleigh Sports. My guess is that it's probably about 1964 vintage because that decal arrangement (just "Sports" on the seat tube) is not a common one, over the years.

The saddle is not original, nor the pedals, nor the grips. Don't think the cable housings are, either. But, that's being picky.

As for value, depends on where you are and exact condition. In the great and wonderful gigantic we all love three-speeds thread, there is a recent example of a bike in Minneapolis (I think) advertised for $50. That one is a step through (lady's model) and a bit older (guessing), but in roughly comparable condition. I would think that if the sheet metal is in good shape, and it appears to be, that it would easily sell for $50 to $75. That seems pretty cheap, but the old bike will need a lot of work and no little expense to get it to be a really nice daily rider.

If it was in my area I would snap it up. It looks to me to be in better than average condition and mostly needs cleaning and lubrication as far as I can tell ...

It may take surprisingly little money to get that on the road. Looks like an early 60's in very good shape. Lube the bearings, adjust the brakes, dial in the shifter and go. Just ask for help.

I would say you can go $q150 or so on this bike and be fine. They fact that it has decent replacement tires and the pump add about $75 to the value over typical as found lower end 3 speeds.

I think this is a model S22 from 1963-64. The S was a lower priced version of the DL22. I say this because it has Endrick rims instead of the Raleigh pattern rims and a round steel kickstand instead of the cast aluminum "Sir Raleigh" type. It also didn't come with the DL22s Brooks leather saddle. They came in 21" and 23" frame sizes, this is a 21". Very nice bike. That paint would come up nicely with a polish and wax.

edit: forgot...To my mind this is more of a $150 bike because of it's good condition. The saddle is probably original. It's only missing it's grips and pedals.

Not sure completely sure on this light but most of these took fairly common size bulbs so you can likely find a modern replacement bulb to get little more light.
