Miyata 710 craigslist
Found this on Craigslist for $150. I haven't done much research into this bike's value, and the photos aren't clear enough to ID components, but I'm wondering what potential flipping value might be. The frame is in good condition, and the parts look to be functional if not clean (I'm looking for a project anyway). Thanks for any advice.

$150 for a bike of this quality is too high for flip potential unless you either are ok losing $$ or you live in a red hot market like Toronto. This assumes it’s going to need to be refurbished which takes time and $$ for new consumables.
Bikes to flip either need to be insanely cheap (like $50) or have unique desirability like one of the Italian brands or a Chicago Paramount. I’d gladly pay $600 for a bike I could sell for $1000. But $150 for a bike that will need $50 to $75 in consumables and four to six hours of time to maybe sell for $250. No so hot.
Now as a keeper, fine.
As an example, I bought a Miyata 712 for $100. Put $75 into consumables and six hours of time, sold for $225. So that’s $50 for six hours work. OK sort of. Had I paid $150 for it, I would have made zero. I wouldn’t pay $100 for the next one to flip unless it had newish tires, rust free cables, clean chain, etc.
i recently bought a Centurion Lemans 12 mixte for $15. How can I not WIN BIG at that price? Well it needed the usual: tires, tubes, cables, housing bar tape, and then it needed saddle, bottom bracket, chain and freewheel.
Took me me a month to sell for $150. May have made $2 an hour....

Buy low. Sell high. My best profits come from the incredibly filthy bikes I get for $30 or $40 and trade up or sell for around $300.

Might be able to make some money on it. I dont put any value on my bike fixing time. Thats my relaxation time. Tearing apart a bike and rebuilding it is enjoyable not work. But thats me.
The hard part is selling it. I've come to the conclusion that people in my area, Chicago, aren't interested in old used bikes. Maybe its different in other areas.

My daughter commuted on a 710 for 4 years, she loved that bike. All the Miyatas are great bikes, I've owned about a dozen - but flip value? I've never made my money back on sale..but I've never found one for dirt cheap..
I had a mint 1200, a truly beautiful bike, pro model, a garage queen. After a few years I tried to sell it for what I paid, $400, ,,,no buyers in this hot market. I was corresponding with someone who had the exact same bike, same minty condition, who was selling it on eBay, and he couldn't get $325. Really odd, if you were buying that same bike new from a Rivendell type seller or restorer you would be paying over a thousand for sure. I ended up parting it out to re-coup the costs, ...go figure.

Agree with all above. I scored a 710 for $50 two months ago. Haven't had time to work on it until this weekend. It cleaned up real nice (thought about keeping it after the wash...) and I'm going to finish it with the consumables within the next few days. Hoping to get at least $200 for it.
At $150 or anything above $100 (at least with these Japanese 80's steels), you're really not going to make any money flipping them. You might break even, and if you're trying to get better at wrenching, it's a really good way to start.
