More Schwinn Sports Tourer Insanity

OK, I posted a link to an eBay auction, about 10 days ago, concerning a Schwinn Sports Tourer. Some knucklehead actually paid $415 USD for an old fillet brazed Sports Tourer.

Apparently there are a lot of Knuckleheads when it comes to old fillet brazed Schwinns. Check out this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/Schwinn-Sports-T...QQcmdZViewItem

What is with these bikes? I understand that the fillet brazed Schwinns were nice bikes in their day, but they're no Paramounts. I'd never pay more than $100 for a bike like this. Does Al Queda have some kind of secret weapon that makes Americans pay stupid money for old garage sale bikes?

For one thing that bike is in Excellent condition. Looks like it
hardly saw any road time.
I'm not schwinn expert but I believe that the fillet brazed schwinns
were just a notch below the paramount series in quality (scooper? can I
get some help here?). I seem to recall that they are highly sought
after in the Schwinn pantheon, either that or I'm making this stuff
up (it could happen) based on senior moments and failing memory

I think it's probably older guys remembering what was hot in their younger years and wanting now what they couldn't afford then. They're probably not into bicycling in a serious way.

Marty, there's nothing wrong with your memory. In the early seventies the Sports Tourer was one step below the Paramount in the Schwinn heirarchy. In 1971, for example, the P13-9 Paramount sold for $350 and the Sports Tourer sold for $196. The next model in the heirarchy, the Super Sport, sold for $136.95 (I used to own a '72 Super Sport I had purchased new, but it got stolen several years ago).

Like Marty says, the one that's listed now appears to be in excellent condition.

I am considering buying this bike, a 1971 Schwinn Sports Tour(er?). 1971 Schwinn Sports Tour I would fit me well, I am 6' 5", and would be good for in town and my commute to work. They are asking $350, does this seem like a reasonable price? If not, what should I counter offer? Thanks!

Go look at it and offer $300 if you want to.

Note that bike is missing the original front and rear wheels, freewheel, spoke protector, derailleur, pedals and possibly more. The decals are nearly gone and the paint is questionable. I would only pay $100 to maybe $200 for one like that.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input, I did go check it out, still have yet to make an offer.

Thanks for the insight, I did go check it out and everything you pointed out is correct. On the plus side, the bike fits me perfectly, hard for us 6' 5" guys and the seller had other bikes that he had for sale that would fit me also. All were in good, clean condition (the seller is a bit anal in his manner and care of his stuff) and he is ready to sell as he wants to offload bikes he does not use. For the Tourer, he said that he did not want to fix the paint and decals as he wanted to leave it original. I am mostly looking for a utility bike that fits my body well, not too worried about if the bike has original components, as long as the components are quality and will function long term. Again thanks for your advice, it is appreciated!

I was looking for my old Sports Tourer thread but can't find it. Not too many production fillet brazed bikes that I know of hence the reason these were just below the Paramounts in Schwinn's line up. Very nice bikes and loaded with stuff as some years came with TA cranks which fetch a decent buck these days. My old Sports Tourer got quite the face lift and ended up sporting full Campag Nuovo Record along with a boat load of frame work. Now it's with someone in Hawaii last time I checked.

These have always commanded a fair price. Fillet brazed, good clearance for tires and fenders and the "72 had a hanger on the D/O. Price seems fair.

Agreed, Look at it this way, how much would a new fillet brazed bike cost today? I'm thinking more than $450.

What's more insane is the price of the SunTour barcon shifters that came on them.

I think the bike is worth the $350 , looks very clean and actually, if he did change out the wheelset, bonus for you. The originals were probably non-hook bead rims. Before you ride it much , might be wise to service the bottom bracket and hubs, if not already done. Good luck !
