Value of a 1970 Raleigh sport
I have been holding onto this one through the winter waiting for warmer months. I don't really keep my eye on the values for Raleigh sports so I could use a little help. The bike is in fair condition, not really ratty but it does show some age. This particular Raleigh was made in Malaysia under contract.
-New tires, red with gumwalls
-New tubes
-new cables (old but clean housings)
-NOS hunt wilde red grips
-NOS generator lamp (may remove it?)
-New cotter pins (of course)
The bike was completely disassembled and cleaned screw by screw. New bearings and fresh grease in any threads and the hubs, BB and headset. Hub was rebuilt, adjusted, oiled and shifts as smooth as possible. The bike appears to have it's original parts, Brooks mattress saddle, Raleigh pedals and red "R" nuts for the seat post binder and wheel nuts.
My local market is NE Ohio. I would consider CL, ebay and maybe even listing in the market place here at BF. Your input is greatly appreciated

Very nice example with nice accessories. I can only hope you get out of it what you have put into it. It is a very clean bike with great character.
I am guessing $275-375 in a good market. Ebay may be better to you in a month or so. Good luck! She is great!

I have the identical bike in Silver, complete with the headlight and generator. I don't intend to sell it but if I was offered $275 for it, it would be instantly gone. My estimate for that bike is around the $150 mark, maybe a little higher, but $200 is really pushing it. BTW, that's in REALLY nice condition.

Thank you guys, I was guessing lower than your estimates so that is encouraging. I think 150 would be nice, I'll probably list it a tad higher at first for some wiggle room. I added the lamp since I had it, would you guys remove it before sale or offer it as additional equipment?
Kurt, I'll get back to you on the serial number.

I had that dilemma with a similar bike I had for a while (1969 Triumph; too small for me). I sold it with the lamp; the buyer liked the lamp, and I didn't. It rattled too much for my taste. Had I liked the lamp more, I would have kept it.

This particular lamp is not a very high quality one and I don't really love the shape. It's just that it is practically new. Maybe I will just leave it in place.

Yeah, leave it. If you don't love it, there's no reason to keep it. Even if you sell it for a loss, at least you're rid of it.

I like your ad. I would drop the before picture. I want the last picture a potential buyer to see of your bike to one of those pristine, clean shots, with the red grips and the red and gum tires. A before picture to a novice just invites questions and possibly concerns. An experienced buyer will appreciate your hard work, but 90% of the buyers out there are clueless.

Very good. How do you insert external pictures in craigslist ads? I've done it, but I want to know how you do it.

Oh! That's easy enough.
Anyway, I think a typical Sports should sell for $150 around here, but yours is very shiny and in the best possible working order, so it should command $200 or more.
Did you overhaul the 3-speed hub just for good measure, or did some need prompt you to do it?

Cool. And hey, it's not that hard, especially if you have a vise, and it's fun! The only thing I don't like doing is putting the pawls and pawl springs back in.
I've had to take two hubs apart recently, because the oil inside had turned to glue. We may be seeing more of that now, because these hubs are getting older.
