Help id this Trek
Hi, any chance of identifying this from these pictures. Looks like it may have cantilever brakes and a long wheel base, some kind of touring model? I spent a lot of time at the vintage Trek web sight, but I couldn't figure it out. The seller said it's Reynolds 531 and the paint's great condition. Any help on the model and of course the value would be greatly appreciated.

Might be a Trek 620, which is a very desirable bike. Lousy pictures make ID difficult. Go look at it, get a serial number, and you will know for sure. At the right (low) price, it does not matter. All vintage steel Treks have pretty good value.

I went to see the Trek today. The frame's straight and paint's really good. Overall the bike's in great condition, but I'm wasn't sure what model it was and it's to small for me. The seller wanted $xxx and wouldn't negotiate. It needs tires, tubes, cables, ect.. I'm thinking there's not much room for profit after getting it roadworthy, I passed on it. Well, after getting home I was able to figure out that it's a 1982 728. All the components are original except the rear derailleur and the shift levers. I think I made a huge mistake. Did I blow it ?

I would have bought it even if it didn't fit. I sold a 720 and a 728 in the last year and did very well.
When someone is looking for a vintage Trek touring bike in their size and find it they REALLy want it if it's in good shape.
I am not sure about the effect of the components that were replaced but even with the cost of consumables you could most likely double the investment.

Yep, I would head back and get it. 728 should bring $500 to $600 fully refurbished and ready to go.
The DT shifters made me think it was a 620. The 72x series has the barcons usually. Bikes are very similar in appearance. Buyers will pay quite a bit more for the 728 than a 620.
Big size is a negative, but the price is so good, that would just probably push the price closer to the $500 mark once fully rehabbed. Tires, tubes, cables are cheap.
