Is this Gitane Tandem worth it?

I stumbles across this on CL today the seller wants $475 for it. he has not given a model name but it has Mafac brakes and Suntour VGT deraileurs. in storage for 25+years but some bad scratches. claims less than 200mi

I am guessing mid '70s? wingnuts

+1 to era, but not to price. The official name was the Gitane Tandem Sport and orignal price in 1973 was $289 US. This one may be a couple of years newer, as it has SunTour derailleurs. Tandems are rare and command good prices but I wouldn't pay over $200. I used to sell them, and last year my old math teacher approached about one I had sold her during the boom. Same color too, IIRC. It may not be as good a condition but I'll check if it's still available and try to get pics, if you're interested. Also, they came in 3 sizes, 24.5"/22.5", 23.5/21.5" and 22.5/19.5". Which size do you need? Shipping may be a problem but you may at least be able to use it to wrangle a much better deal.

I have a Gitane tandem I'd be happy to sell you. It's early 80's and has barely been ridden. It would be a little cheaper then this one but you could pick it up here outside Philly. PM me for more details if you want em.

EDIT:

here it is

-holiday76's offered tandem should be a lot lighter, given the aluminum crankset and rims. However, it looks strange without the extra tubes running from the headtube to the 2nd BB shell or rear droputs. How does it handle without them? Seems like most tandem manufacturers considered them a necessity for handling. My 1986 Santan Elan has a standard diameter tube running form the headtube to the 2nd BB shell.

i wish I could tell you. My wife will never get on it, hence the sale. I've only ridden it by myself, all lonely-like. My son won't be ready to ride it with me for at least another 8 years.

LOL that would be my biggest issue (aside from a 2nd floor walk up) but maybe can pickup boytoy cruising the beach on it.

thankyou so much for the offer, I'll have to figure out a way to come and look. it looks very nice, I love the color.

I was very suspicious about the $475 for the one I posted. it looks nice but 'bike boomish'
