Is this vintage Zebrakenko (thunder) bike worth the money?
Please check out this ad:

I live in NYC and have not owned a bicycle in a while. I’ve ridden this bike, and I really like it. The owner, who seems honest, is asking 200 on his ad, 180, in person.
The internet seems to be a bit “thin” with information about this bike. I believe it to be an old lowish-end Japanese bike…and I just want to know if it’s worth the #. Gears and brakes were in good condition, the tires need replacing….
Thank you

Even in NY,NY I think at most it is a $100 as it sits. Needs new tires, tubes and brakes. Definately a lower end Japanese buke boom bike from the "70's.

Bottom end bike, with bottom end components. But that may well be the market price in NYC. Looks pretty clean.
And if you are not ready/able to replace the tires yourself, you could easily pay $75 or more to get two tires installed (including the price of the tires).
Brand really doesn't matter much, just look for similar bikes (Suntour 7 derailleurs, high ten steel frame, etc).

the bike is in good condition....thanks for the feedback.
he offered to replace the tires and tune it up well.
would $200 at that rate seem reasonable. its the first bike I saw, plus, i haven't owned a bike in a while, but i don't want to get ripped off.....
thoughts?

Thanks both of you, and thanks Kobe, too, for you assessment. In NYC everything seems inflated. I guess I could tell him that I was doing a bit of research and found that it wasn't too outstanding out a bike, perhaps 150 or 175 will do? hmmmm

I had a Zebrakenko (briefly) earlier this year. It was the "Storm" model. Decent, Japanese-made, bike boom quality bike. Everything on it was solid, but not remarkable. Nice alloy Araya wheels and decent hubs. The bike was not light, but not overly heavy either. Sold it for $100.00 to a college student and he was very pleased.
If I were you, I would look for something like a Schwinn World Sport of similar vintage. I think you'll be better off in the long run, just MHO.
