after buying this bike for 11 bucks and found out it is a BOTTECCHIA ? i hardly had any luck well parts i did find out where to get ? but prices are a nightmare i say its 80% cause foir one i cant at all find original seat or pump ? i dod find the original brake handles but i cant afford 250 ,00 U.S.D i do have them but ones i have are cracked and last is the logo's i found the most earliest ones i can find ? 1966 i did see a photo one of you posted that matched my bike it said 1961` but i think they all kinda look alike any how ? so what do you think ? did i do okay? now be easy on me its my first bike i ever restored that is actaully worth more than i paid for? oh let me add one more thing ? at first i thought i was going to sell this bike but after i took it for a ride ? its gotta be one of the best bikes i've riddin in a long time? i loved the smooth shifting and great speed pick up with hardly any effort? so i think i'll use it for when i long distance's.

Can't really follow your message. Any bike for $11 is a deal, even walmart crap. $11 is a tire, and not even a very good one.

Holy smokes Batman, you only paid $11 for a bike like that and your worried if you make more selling it? You could have just washed and waxed it and gotten a great deal more for it. If they can get $150 for a piece crap Schwinn Varsity then yes you can sell it for a lot more then $11, in fact a lot more then $150.

my brain hurts. I can't make heads or tails of the post. my guess is he is complaining about some brake levers being $250+ but what kind?

the bike looks nice and I agree for $11 even with DiaCompe brake levers it should resell for atleat $15



if this is done it could still use some repositioning of the brake levers and some tape.

Given that the OP referred to the price in "U.S.D." and with a comma instead of a decimal, it is safe to say that English is not the original poster's first language.

$11.00 was a great buy on the bike. I don't know what the original spec would have been for the damaged levers, period-correct saddle and frame pump, but I would think some suitable replacements could be found on eBay at reasonable cost.

Ok fine, I bid $21 for the bike, that's a $10 dollar profit for the owner and he doesn't have to invest in brakes so really the profit is $260.

YEAH I KNIDA LIKE THE IDEA OF HAVEING A BIKE WITH ALL ITS ORIGINAL PARTS HERES WHAT I STARTED OUT WITH I bought it just over a month ago i thought it was an old schwinn i couldnt see head badge it did have 5 layers of paint from previous owners ? sorry about my post i did nt know i was goin to be made fun of i just thought you were pro's at knowing about bike i was wrong good bye.

Based on your pictures, you have found a late sixties or early seventies Bottecchia Model Special, a very nice mid-level Italian road bicycle. Good luck with cleaning the bike up and making it road worthy...


As for original parts for the bicycle, I have boxes full.

Randy's picture of the red bike has what appears to be Universal brake levers. I would guess that these are what your bike had originally.

Paddy, lots of people here (not me) actually have been professionals in the bike field, and lots of others have years, decades, of experience with vintage bikes. You're seeing some of that in the replies. No one is making fun of you, but your writing style is very hard to follow. If English is not your first language it's completely understandable, if English is what you speak every day, less so. Lack of grammar, punctuation, and capitalization makes it kind of blur together.

i wanted to make it look just like Randy's bike,but i couldnt find the right color ? and i did use his bike as reference to where exactly i should place logo stickers i think i did ok ?

Universal brakes were built by Fratelli Pietra Società Collettiva and were the preferred choice for many serious riders and Italian bicycles would most often be fitted with Universals... the model number denotes the year of introduction and many remained in production for decades.

As far as I know, Campagnolo did not offer brakes or a complete groupo until the introduction of Record brakes in the late sixties so prior to this a Campy equipped bike would have been equipped with what was Universals... and since the great Coppi used Universal brakes am sure every Italian hopeful had to have these on their bicycle.

Even when Campagnolo offered the better finished Record brake the Universal 68 cost much less so was still widely used.

Unversal produced brakes until 1985 and cannot see why a set of what were widely produced brakes should cost so much unless you are looking at some earlier models with the rare white hoods.

The brakes on the OP's bike are model 61... Universal only made one model of centre pull which was deemed inferior to Mafac's centre pull brakes although the Universal levers were favoured over the Mafac levers.
